Looking at getting my wife a Mini. She wants a nice pearl white one with black wheels thats all she has asked for... now Im thinking if we get a Cooper S it will be quite a fun toy too... However I'm hearing mixed comments about the S MPG.

Can anybody please tell me truthfully what the MPG will be on an S with round town and urban type driving...

Thanks

It would be a 54 plate age I'm guessing with our budget

Our R53 gets about 250-300 miles from a full tank of super (£65ishi think?) Thats just pottering around town

My 53 plate is currently averaging 27mpg according to the on board computer. It could do more but the noise from the charger is very addictive!

A R56 S will achieve around 30mpg (+/- 10%) around town depending on driving style and ext temperature.

On average I have managed 31.7mpg from my R53 Cooper S since buying it in the summer- a few longer trips which have boosted the average but mostly local journeys where I guess it averages about 27mpg or so.

Our R53 2005 averages 26.6 mpg - all short journeys, blasting around, so would consider that a worse case mpg figure.

It isn't difficult to get 30+ on a run though.

My Mrs 08 Cooper S Convertible was averaging around 26mpg in summer on her drive to work which is mostly traffic but with a bit of a run, only about 8 miles each way. With the colder weather it's gone up to around 30mpg though I'd guess that's more to do with driving more sensibly on slippery roads.

Funnily enough my MX5 which is also supercharged with a stand-alone ecu and has 245bhp-200lb/ft averages around 28mpg and that's tuned for track use and is pretty much only used for hoonage! On a run I can get it up to the high 30s but on track it's nearer to 10mpg biglaugh

My R53 JCW (a little thirstier than an S) is showing 27mpg since I got it. I understand the R53 is thirstier than the turbo R56's too. This is mainly 5 mile shuttles to the station etc and in this weather won't be very good. I knew it wouldn't be brilliant but couldn't care less. Can't believe how much this car has got under my skin already.

LOVE IT!

OK. Did an experiment today in the R56 MCS. 2 deg centigrade, stone cold engine. Had to do 15 miles so I let the engine warm up for 3/4 miles. Then I was both trying to be very careful with fuel but I also occasionaly squirted. Mixture of town driving and dual carriage away and I achieved 35mpg on the OBC.

The BIG problem is, the engine has such accessible performance that you can't refrain from using it so you would normally never get that high a mpg return...

Round town and a daily commute of less 9 miles a day with a few a/b road runs our 53 plate S is getting 30mpg. I have had 43MPG on a run up to Aberdeen and back (total mileage of 330miles on one tank with 1/4 left.

And on the other hand when i go for a hoon it drops to 25mpg.

These have all been worked out at the pump not on the trip as it is only a guide.

I have had my 2006 Cooper S for 2 weeks now, I have not had a chance to do any long runs yet so almost all of my mileage has been to work about back, a 6 mile trip through very windy country lanes which means I am constantly speeding up and slowing down, and rarely get out of 3rd gear!

I am getting around 18-20 mpg (much less if I have a 'quick' drive home), but suspect it would be much better if it were around town or had a chance to get out of 3rd gear! - and if the engine had more of a chance to get up to running temp. If you don't mind the fuel bill I would strongly recommend the Cooper S (R53 Supercharged jobbie), it has more umph than a brass band and has an exhaust that pops and bangs so much you will find yourself driving with the window down, even when its -5!! If you are looking for a car that does not have a drinking habit like George Best but still looks good then I would go for the Cooper.

I have owned an R53, 54 plate Cooper S.

I could get 33mpg at a steady 70mph. Round our local country roads I would get 27-28mpg, whereas SWMBO would get around 30-31mpg on a similar run.

We now own a R56 Clubman S which is far more economical.

A steady 60 mph I have achieved 50mpg. At 80 it will do about 41mpg, and around the local roads will do about 37mpg.

Combined run will see 30, driving normal 26-28 and hooning 18-20

Thinking about it, the other thing that affects mpg, for me at least, is the gearing. The R53 is just so willing and the gear ratios so close together that I need to remind myself to drive it differently to all my other cars if I'm not out for a hoon. It will comfortably drive in 5th at 30mph, and being supercharged there's no lag and it pulls from anywhere in the rev range. Only 6th can be said to be anything like an overdrive. It's just a grown up go-cart!

I had a MCS (Dreadfull car, but thats another story) and try as hard as I could, I could not get over 30mpg and as soon as you press on it dropped to 22-24mpg.

What makes them so uneconomical? Like I said, I have a supercharged MX5 (intercooled MP62 so a bigger charger and running a higher boost than the M45 on the MCS) which was mapped by a novice (me) which gets as good or better mpg which doesn't seem right to me. Do they run rich? I've heard people talk of exhaust pops on overrun which does suggest overfuelling and is easy enough to tune out so I don't know why Mini wouldn't have done that.
