New tyres to be had...
Discussion
The A6 is in need of new boots all round and I'm wondering if there are some better options available than I'm currently riding on. I've got Continental Sport Contact 3s at the moment and I've been pleased with the traction, handling and grip both wet and dry. I'm less pleased with the life I'm getting from them. I know it's a big heavy bus (A6 Avant 3.0TDI Quattro) and it's running on 19" wheels (not by choice) but the life has been shocking.
I bought the car with 6k on the clock and changed the fronts at 11.3k
Changed front tyres again at 15k due to a puncture on one side and swapping with full size spare to keep wear even
Changed all four tyres at 22k
Rotated front to rear at 31k
Now I need new boots all round again at 33k
That poor life has got to mean something wrong. I don't think I drive excessively hard - I average about 36-38mpg on the way to work which is a 20 mile trip of lanes, dual carriageway and town. Wear appears to be fairly even across the tyre with perhaps slightly more wear on the outside than the inner. I do about 20k a year, most of which is motorway.
So the question is what is there that's available as a 255/35/R19 that will last more than 8-11k a time?
Options so far:
Anything I should consider that I haven't found above?
Cheers
Chris

- Dunlop SP Sport Max - £209 @ ATS-Euromaster
- Hankook K107 - £219 @ ATS-Euromaster
- Goodyear Eagle F1 ASY2 - £219 @ tyre-shopper.co.uk

- Bridgestone Potenza RE050A - £275 @ Blackcircles

- Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 - £289 @ Kwik Fit
Anything I should consider that I haven't found above?

I found www.tyre-shopper.co.uk very reasonable. I got a discount for getting 4 tyres done.
My local National Tyres centre did the fitting.
I'd use them again.

I've got Michelin PS3s on the A5. Bought four in Dec2010. Rotated them at 8k. Put some part worn spares on the front at 18k, rears now at 23k (8k of that on the front don't forget). Getting 4 more this weekend from Event tyres. Your size for PS3s is £259.72 from them. I like them for good grip wet & dry and last pretty well.
The local tyre place to me recommended the ZZ5s for mine, but would last about 2/3 - 3/4 the life of the Michelins. I have no opinion on them though.

Camskill have got a Continental Sport Contact 5 in the right size for £204.90 each - http://tinyurl.com/72egufo I'm guessing this price is just for tyre, not for fitting?
The tyre is down as being Mercedes preferred. Is the tyre going to morally offended that my car was made in Ingolstadt not Stuttgart?

falken 452's
I've just put a couple on my 335i (265/30/R19) and have them on the fronts. They give good grip and cost less than £130 a piece however they have only been on the fronts for 3k and the rears even less but look like new!
Another vote for 452s! Had them on my TT, i found them to have a good balance between wet/dry grip, life and noise. Well priced too. Correct. Delivery is about a six quid for a pair of tyres. Local fitter sorts them out for a tenner a corner. One tyre that hasn't yet been mentioned that really is well worth considering is the Nokian Z G2. It consistently ranks up with the big name manufacturers in tests but is only £196.50 per corner for a 255/35 ZR19 from mytyres.
Very good in the wet and very quiet with low rolling resistance.

Which tests would they be?Very good in the wet and very quiet with low rolling resistance.
Yep, a top UHP tyre like Michelin, Conti still have the edge by a little, but the Nokian really isn't far off at all and a long way ahead of the usual mid priced tyres such as Falken, Kumho, etc.
As you know, I'm not one to skimp on the tyre choice, but I will be changing to these on the XJS from the current Michelin PSs once they're worn out.
Edit:
Same for their H and V tyres. They don't really seem to market to the UK, but they are well known in Europe.

Ignore the Falkens unless you are desperate to save money and then convince everyone on the internet they are super amazing and you honestly didnt do it to save money, honest, no really.
Go for the CS5 or the Eagle F1 AS2. Best tyres on that list.
