Hypothetical question. A thread on here recently about a guy with an LPG'd Aygo getting 90mpg got me thinking...

Say, you have £5,000 total budget to spend on a car that will do a daily commute of about 50 miles, majority on A roads and motorways, but some town driving too.

What car would you choose? Would you modify it in any way? How would you/would you change your driving style? Would you consider electric?

What overall MPG figure do you think you could attain?

I've not seen the Aygo thread, but you'd have to do a hell of a lot of miles to recover the costs of the LPG install. If the 90mpg (petrol equivalent, I presume) figure is correct, then I can't imagine being able to beat that for £5K.

Electric is obviously out of the question at current prices. Driven gently there are a few small diesels that can average close to 70mpg, but the cost of diesel these days means you're not saving quite as much as you think.

Personally i'd be looking for a car that can achieve a realistic 50mpg, that will be reliable and cheap to service.
A 6 year old £3K Aygo with a £2K LPG install is all well and good, but if something major fails your sums go out of the window.

i would just buy a tidy mk4 VAG tdi for £2k and keep the rest. 50 mpg easy.

You can get a full 4 cylinder sequential LPG kit for less than £700, firms are offering fully fitted kits (unsure of spec) for less than £900. I think the rising cost of LPG and the absence of the old Gov't grant means that prices have become a lot keener to keep customers coming in.

Ok so we're deviating towards bikes but a used Honda CG125 would be my bet. 100+mpg, simple and ridiculously reliable mechanicals and pretty much zero depreciation. Tax and Insurance are peanuts and you use regular fuel so no filling issues.

However, 65mph ish.. Vulnerable and Chilly in winter. Not the choice of a die-hard car driver, i'd suspect biggrin

Get a Passat TDi Sport. Should get you 50mpg on motorway driving, if not more.

Those figures are appalling! It weighs about 8% of a diesel golf, has about 8% of the swept volume and it can only manage twice the MPG? If it was even half way efficient it should be doing 500mpg! biggrin

Sadly it doesn't quite work like that. hehe

I suspect there's less difference in CDa than you'd think.

yes yes yes.. But it's still (other than a teaspoon of fuel) virtually free motoring. Your diesel golf chuff-chuff can't compete. biggrin Even tyres are virtually bicycle tyres. biggrin

Don't forget servicing, repair, insurance and VED costs either.

Nothing will beat a small bike for overall cheap motoring.

Unfaired motorcycles have huge drag coeffiecients considering how small they are relatively. And it would be flat out - new generation four strokes struggle to top 70 plus, for the fastest ones.

As to 125s on motorways, doable, but I wouldn't recomend one for it. The ones which can keep up with car based traffic aren't exactly fuel effcient.

Overtaking trucks on a 4 stroke is interesting...
