So, after 20 years of more or less continuous TVR ownership (with a slight break in the middle) I have finally parted with the Cerbera.

A former 4.2 owner came over on Sunday, wanted it and so we struck a deal, money was moved about and off he went with it.

I'm still not really sure how I feel about it, I loved all of them, from the little 1600m I started with to the bonkers 4.5 Cerbera I ended up with and the Griff and 4.2 in between. All very different yet all really similar.

They are utterly fantastic cars, I did well over 100,000 miles in mine over the years and was left stranded on precisely zero occasions. I had issues certainly and I waved them off on a low loader twice but they had always got me home.

Saying that however I cannot see me ever having another one (well unless I somehow end up with a silly amount of spare cash and buy a Griff) TVR ownership needs a certain amount of commitment, and I just cannot really justify that now, in all honesty I probably should have stopped before the last Cerbera, but they are so nice it was an itch I had to scratch.

I have to say that the best advice I can give anyone is drive them as much as you can. They can be a little truculent at times but that is part of the joy and they so love to be driven.

I'll lurk on here (if nothing else to see if Gazzab ever has a trouble free season wink) and wish you all the very best of times with these epic cars.

Cheers

It is hard to say which was favorite, I did a body off chassis rebuild on the 1600m, sweating blood and tears over the thing but it was my only car for years. The M cars have a proper sports car look to them, it was a lovely thing even with a little engine.

The Griff 500 was a car I wanted so badly, I worked my arse off to get the cash together for it, fell in love the the Brundles demo car and managed to scrape a deal together to buy it with 500 miles on the clock. I had it for 6 or 7 years, we took it on honeymoon, it wen to le mans, toured europe, all sorts. In my life it is the only car I have ever really, really wanted.

The Cerbera 4.2 was my best friends car, an early one (28th I think) it was very raw. I only bought it because we had just had our first child (hi Alf) and it was cheap. I'd never really liked Cerberas up to that point.. 2 years and 20,000 miles later I only sold it because I was starting to do silly annual miles and needed a derv for a bit. It was an epic car though.

Two years later I decided I wanted it back (it ended up with Andrew Guy who might be along in a bit) but he had spent a load on a respray and did not really want to sell it so I went looking for my ultimate Cerbera, a black 4.5 post 2000. A great car and we've had some good times but as I said, it was probably the wrong car at the time.

So, if I was to have one back for keeps it would definitely be the Griff but I doubt I'd use it much so I'd be breaking my own golden rule of TVR ownership!

Cheers

Your TVR experiences will be useful for all of us on here and the new owners to come, so keep lurking.

Have you got desires for a car of another make and model.

I love being mentioned in retirement speeches. Normally the speeches are more abusive though!
Get yourself a chim. Half the price of a griff.

Its not about the money, and I don't like Chims (ducks).

Fear not I've not gone overly dull (R35 GTR), which is proving to be rather excellent if a little quiet.

I'm serious though, I really cannot wait for you to get your Cerbera back (I realise you are probably more interested in you getting it back wink)

To my mind the R35 GTR would be the only thing that is remotely affordable that could follow Cerbera ownership and move the game on in terms of all out performance and handling by a long margin i would imagine.

You don't need a new conservatory, make do with your existing kitchen, windows and plumbing, but you do need a GTR.

If you read PH you'll see they are doing an article on an evora. Brand new cutting edge car, £70K pricetag, with 1400Kg weight and 350bhp engine.

Its interesting to think people are so blinded by the altar of the shiny and new that a Cerbera, which looks better, turns more heads, goes considerably faster even allowing for the age difference, and has bags more character is a small fraction of that cost.

It is a little known fact that I was approached before xmas after a comment on PH and let my second 2003 immaculate 4.5 Joolz mapped Cerb go to a new home (another enthusiast with previous Cerb experience) just before the New Year. And it's being replaced by a new MY11 GTR on 1st March - can't wait. There must be something in the air wink

How are you finding the GTR experience David?

Well yes, but it'd take some commitment at the very least to get a Cerb to steer and handle as well as an Evora - the ride/handling/steering of that is easily the best out of all the cars I've driven...

It may be dynamically sound and very well sorted but there is no excuse for a kerb weight of 1442kg in such a car, its a joke. My Honda Accord Type R is a large 4 door family saloon and that weighs over 100kg less than the Lotus. They have lost the very prinicple of Lotus engineering.

Colin Chapman would remove washers from underneath bolts where they were not needed - 'why take a washer aorund a track'.

Anyway enjoyable to read your TVR experiances, these things really make your feel differently. All the best with the mighty GTR.

The GTR (mine is an 09) is a fantastic car. So incredibly quick and very easy to drive, alarmingly practical as well. I was surprised at how much character it has, I was prepared for it to be a bit binary but no it is really good fun. We all love it. A little quiet but that can be sorted if you want, very easy to tune up to 550 bhp plus. I know it is a bit lardy but it is not really noticeable. You will love it...

From what I have read on the GTR forum, if you take a MY09, add a MY11 gearbox software upgrade and a stage 1 tune at the likes of Litchfield for a couple of grand, it'll be more or less the same spec as a new one.

Counting the days.....

Strange, I'll have to have a go in a GTR.

At the mo I can't get my head round it as a sports car.
