Level 3 Cold Alert, brace yourselves or die
Discussion
The news this morning was full of a terrible epidemic that is engulfing the UK, apparently we are on Level 3 alert for cold weather!! The only higher level is Level 4, and if it reaches 4 everybody just freezes where they stand, and have to wait until Spring to thaw out. Our health is at terrible risk this week.
What is it with the UK and epidemics/warnings? To me it's like contriolling the population through fear "Level 3 alert!! I dont know what that means but it sounds very official and scary, please government, look after us!!". FFS, we are a first world country with access to warm clothes on every high street, Level 3? really? it feels as cold as February normally feels, in fact up till now it's been relatively mild, so why do they try and sensationalise everything?
Problem is, so many people get drawn in "hear about the weather warnings? Im going via tescos on my way home to panic buy water and multi vitamins, Oh, and fill the car with petrol in case we hit Level 4 and I need to escape somewhere warmer with my family". The next thing will be "Petrol shortage rocks UK as panicked people without warm jackets prepare to migrate South"
It's the same with the flu "epidemic", Lets get Joe public panicking and feeling like they shouldnt leave their homes in case they get swine flu, maybe we should all get gas masks and move into underground bunkers.
If this is level 3, then surely every Jan/Feb is level 3? cause it's not any colder than last year, plus I walk to work every day and Im a wussy when it comes to cold, and I havent frozen yet.
I just dont get this need to instill fear and panic in the population every year through some epidemic that is really no worse than what has been around every other year. Is it the news stations being sensationalist twits or is it the government using it as a form of control? Or are there really big wussys in power who believe that they have to panic about everything and feel they have to panic everyone along with them?

The problem is a generally thick population who even despite the warnings manage to get themselves into difficulty.Munter said:

Good point, I can imagine a headline now "Man wearing only shorts recued by emergency services after he began to feel very cold" "General warning issued against the wearing of shorts while Uk gripped by icy winter".williamp said:
I've never heard of the alerts being different levels before- I dont remember them calling thr snow last year a level. So is it new?
I hadnt heard of these levels before either, but you cant beat a level, they should have just called it Def Con 4 or something.Edited by BananaBok on Friday 3rd February 10:13

"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary."- H. L. Mencken
