Relocating the Air Cleaner/AFM & Expansion Tank
Discussion
I've noticed this has been done on a few 400/450SE's and I have a couple of questions
- Is this done so the air taken in is slightly cooler, i.e. - away from the rad?
- I guess you can use the holes for the AFM to mount the expansion tank or does it need a bracket making?
- Where does the AFM unit get fixed to in it's new position? I guess it is not just dangling in mid air?
Look forward to comments from those who has done it as I may do it to mine !
Cheers, David

I origanally bracketed it back onto the rocker cover but was advised, (rightly or wrongly is sill open to discusion) not to because of earthing issues. So I used some alli to bracket it to the inner wing. Also advised against, as it would rip out of the fibreglass with the movement of the engine. It hasn't suffered at all as there is enough flex in the connecting pipe to take up any movement. The brackets are not the best design in the world but it works untill I think of something better.
What is noticable is the induction noise, I first thought there was something wrong with the car

I can't say I have noticed any massive power gains, I mainly done it "because I can". I think it looks better there too.
The 450se in the classifieds has a simular arrangement but I can't see any bracketing holding it up so maybe it just wobbles around

If you had forced air induction or a cold feed pipe coming from the nosecone and going up to the K&N then you might see a small difference..Engine bay temperatures are the culprit..You can use lagged or ceramic coated exhausts to keep the heat levels down..Heat sheilds are useful as well but there is not a lot of room under the wedge bonnet so you might be limited to expensive mods for small gains in power..Owning a V6 cologne is a good example of an engine where you can spend thousands just for small power gains..Unless you go the turbo route and thats not cheap!!..However..I have done quite a lot of reading as regards to maximising the cologne..Obviously..cam..staged heads..bigger valves..lightend ...balanced..port matching and lower compression ratios are a plus..Bigger fuel regulators and forced air is another..I shall be having mine prepared sometime this year for turbo fitting next year and all the fore mentioned work done as i have found a good reputable company that can do the work for far less than anyone can quote..Once that is done i shall be fitting one of these or just the feed to my modified airbox and linking it up to full throttle...The cool tube can go in between the air feed although im not sure if it would be better before the AFM or fuel sensor as then the regulation of fuel would calculate the cooler temperatures..Again its not cheap..Zigahttp://focus.c-f-m.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPR...
