I've just noticed the wifes Astra Turbo (petrol) is on 81,000 miles and its original turbo.
I've always changed the oil every 4-5000 miles with a fully synthetic.
I always thought they only lasted about 50k.
Any other big milers out there?

I had a Leon Cupra R making about 270bhp, 95,000 miles and it was on the original turbo. It felt so, so strong, it probably had years of life left in it.

50,000 miles per turbo? Surely double that is more usual?

fk me, you're doing something wrong if you kill a turbo in 50k.

Every one of my Saabs has gone over 100k on their original turbo, my most recent one left me on 208k.

To kill a turbo in 50k is bonkers.

Run it on good quality oils, change the oil and filter at the specified intervals, idle for 30 secs before switching off each time and it'll last the life of the engine. 200k isn't uncommon for old saabs, and a million miles or so probably wouldn't be out of reach for the turbo on a truck engine.

I remember my driving instructor telling me that he had been told by many a pub mechanic that the turbo in his 1.7CDTI Astra driving school car would get past the 50,000 mark, he returned it to the lease company with 100,000 miles after 2 and a bit years of driving, complete with a perfectly healthy turbo.

Don't believe all of the stories you hear!

The OP was asking about petrol engines though.

I did over 70,000 miles in my ibiza cupra on the original turbo, 40,000 or so of those miles the engine had been chipped. I sold it two years ago it was still strong then and to my knowledge it is still going well to this day.

Our Police Volvo 850's and S70's were sold on 150000 miles. I can't ever remember a turbo going.

My Leon 20VT was on about 108k when I sold it, still on the original turbo.

50k per turbo?!

What about all these Volvos and Saabs that are on well over 150k, still on original turbos, and still going strong?

Even some modern diesel turbos can last a long time if looked after properly.

If you average 30mph, that is only 2,700 operating hours.

Call back when it gets to 10,000 hours

OH's 2000-X A3 1.9TDI (110) has about 180,000 miles and is on its original turbo.

Not always been serviced to the schedule, or treated particularly gently from cold either!

We've had an A6 1.8T Avant that has done a 1 mile commute (if you can call it that!) 5 days a week for the last 11 years and it's still on its first turbo at 148K miles.
