"billy, don't be a hero".

Someone'll remake that one day and ruin it.

In the mid 1970s, my mates and I used to watch The Old Grey Whistle Test every week. It was almost a religious thing, it couldn't possibly be missed. Our parents hated it, the music meant nothing to them, they just couldn't understand it. My dad was into Jazz, he would try and get me to listen to John Coltrane, I wanted to listen to Led Zeppelin. We swore to each other that we would always stay abreast of current music, we would never turn in to our parents, we would always be hip. Everyone from Dory Previn to Jethro Tull, Led Zep to Otway and Barrett. We listened to them all, and loved being part of the new generation.

Roll the clock forward, and I'm listening to all the stuff I always loved. I also know what my old man was on about, and Miles Davis, John Coltrane and other Jazz greats are n my playlist. But I know that I've failed. I've become a boring old tosser. I just can't get my head around this Rap stuff. I'm sorry mate, I know there's supposed to be no such thing as a bad song, we all respect each other's music, but if you really believe that's the most powerful song recorded, then you just haven't heard enough music yet.

How about Who Knows Where the Time Goes? by Fairport Convention http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2xODjbfYw8

or If This is Goodbye by Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McnNd3zCMv4

Just for starters

Yes I do, it's the context more than the songs originality.

I've never been able to find a copy of Roachford performing this track on Later with Jools. If you can hear past the background junk on this one its good but still not a patch on the performance on Later. Can't recall a better one on the show in fact.
