Do these modern TDIs make drivers more aggressive?
Discussion
Just a thought, but having all that torque makes it too easy for people to squirt up behind other cars on any dual carriageway and motorway, its a kind of drug. I remember being a nightmare in my mk1 Audi TDI. You just squeeze the throttle, take off, wait for the guy in front to get out of the way and squirt off again. However, since changing to a smooth 1.8T Passat, 'Ive calmed down dear, quite a lot actually and enjoy the scenery from the inside lane. what do others think? A major proportion of tailgating numpties seem to be in 2 litre turbo diesels....does absolute torque corrupt?!

It's probably just that a lot of the tailgaters are reps who used to have petrol company cars and now have diesels.[/generalisation]Edited by StevieB on Saturday 4th February 08:43
On my commute I do often see all sorts of people driving(some regularly) driving cars they way they were not intended or rather completely pointlessly.
The worst are the Yaris & Prius owners. Yaris drivers for buying a car for regular motorway use and thshing the poor things at over 80mph, and I've never seen a Prius cruising. They always seem to be in a rush overtaking, getting close and braking.
Anyway , I've held a theory the diesel TDI drivers are the most inefficient drivers as they seem to think IMO that as the car is 'efficient' they can rag it a lot more . By the same principle I see many diesel owners sitting in their cars with the engine running while on the phone, munching burgers or reading the paper.

The OP has a point. I have a company van at the moment. It's a Vauxhall Combi 1.7Tdi. I had the 1.3Cdti before that and I'm enjoying the extra umph, especially low down. It's just enough to get around slower moving stuff, and I do find myself adopting a heavy right foot.
Mind you, I'm not paying the fuel bill.

Definitely true, I was an offender when in the UK. Company car, 123d and I had it remapped. Silly levels of torque for busy roads. Throttle was like an on/off switch. I think you are right op, different cars different driving style, I also detest the what always seemed to be passats that were being driven by Lewis hamilton types.

Big difference between a 'heavy right foot' and driving like a c**t, up someone else's @rse.
I agree totally. For that, I would definitely have to be in an A3 2.0 tdi S Line......

I don't think this is really anything to do with it. That lazy rush of torque is pretty much the same effect as squeezing a petrol through the rev range, so it's just as easy to blitz about in a petrol car as it is a diesel. More fun aswell, no doubt!I think the extra aggression from diesel drivers comes more from the fact that they feel emasculated. They are driving the diesel rep-mobile, the oil burning version of the car they wish they could afford. This is why 320d's and A4 TDi's are driven so poorly, the driver at the wheel hyperventilating and telling themselves "It is a REAL BMW/Audi and I demand respect".

I don't do a lot of motorway miles. Never have done. But it infuriates me greatly having to sit behind some kno8head who won't move out of the fast lane or indeed a series of kno8heads travelling in a 70mph outside lane convoy. This is one of the times when I really enjoy having a fast car as it is possible (when a small gap comes up) to floor it and nip round on the inside of these plebs before continuing at a nice cruising speed. Then bask in the satisfaction of pointlessly flashing headlights and a gesticulating eejit disappearing rapidly in your rear-view mirror.

The unpalatable truth for some of you petrol freaks is that modern diesel cars can be faster than their petrol equivalents, and that must be very difficult for you diesel haters to stomach, hence the vitriol re diesel drivers.
