Hi all just had the brother-in-law on the phone asking our advice on a little venture he's got in mind. The details.
He has had a house built on a remote Philippine island (electric for a few hours a day,no mains water,no roads, 45 minutes by boat to the nearest properly inhabited area) he's going to use solar panels for running a fridge ect and build a reverse osmosis set up for the water.
He wants to go and live there (who wouldn't) to make a living out there he wants to rent the house out to people for holiday breaks. He will rent elsewhere when (if) people use his place. His thinking of the whole plan is this, pick people up from the airport, take them to the beach via the supermarket to stock up for there stay (none on the island) Take them over in his boat (all this takes approx 3 hours) show them the set up, leave them to enjoy ( also be on hand to take them out on the boat ect if needed).
The question.
Would people use it or are we used to luxury holidays being pampered ect
The house

That sounds like a great idea.

I would be very nervous of medical emergencies or accidents. How far to the nearest hospital?

I believe there is a clinic on the island. There is also a school on the southern part of the island. Also there would be medical facilities on Daan Bantayan about 45minutes by pump boat.

I have written an account of my recent holiday to the island so you can get a better idea of what it is like there, the link is http://ludchurchmyblog.wordpress.com/places-furthe...

I aim to build something like this for my retirement and go and live out there but rent out in the meantime till I do retire.

Is the owner a local or an expat and how did they go about getting the planning and buying all the necessary labour and supplies to build something like that?

Got any idea on costs?

Maybe you should just stay at home instead

I meant as the owner I'd be worried. People are so quick to try and blame others these days. I was merely wondering what the implications would be.

Hi, I'm the owner, I was lucky that I was given the land, a friend who owns a house and quite a bit of land oversaw the work as I live in the UK. Her friend was an architect so sorted out all the planning and shipping the materials to the island. It cost me £15,000 to have it built. I want to get a rain water tank built as drinking water is in short supply on the island. Regards Gary

Isn't this all a bit odd ??!!

Somebody posts about an idea for renting a house out 'somewhere' in the Philipines nicknamed Tacagni.

A later poster 'believes he knows' about facilities on the island even though it hasn't been named, Kawasaki1300 - name Gary Tacagni from Cheshire.

Then the owner pops up as well, moondust234, astonishingly with the same name Gary Tacagni from - wait for it - Cheshire !!

BTW - I would love to stay there too, real Robinson Crusoe stuff !!

OP original... tells BIL about thread.

BIL logs on as Kawasaki1300 then as moondust234 with a name change after the 1st 2 posts but you still see Kawasaki1300 as poster.

try changing own name to SimonV12ster and then posting and you will see the same.

Oh OK - fair enough - just seemed a little odd !!

And yes, I would still love to stay somewhere like that. I believe A LOT of people would like something different and a bit more of a real/raw experience than your usual holiday lets. thumbup
