depends what golf really, comes in alot of powers and you didnt say what mk you were looking at. mk4 is a barge to drive and deisel is boring, st is nice but your end up stuffing both into a tree anyway.

They're quite different! What about a Clio 182 or 197? They're better than the Fiesta.

For £7000?

Does it have to be a hatch? Do you need more than 2 seats? Does it need to be that new?

There's a lot of good cars for £7000, but a bit more criteria should narrow it down a bit.

Different cars.

Drive them both and see which you prefer.

Fuel comsumption will be vastly different.

For relative comparison, my son went from a Fiesta 1.4 Zetec to a 2005 Golf 1.9TDI Sport. The Golf is just in a different league to the fiesta.

Granted the ST will be relatively quick, but the Golf will be much easier on fuel.

I guess its down to your priorities really.

havnt got a licence on loser plates so carnt drive them yet... just thought it would be better to have a car before i pass so im not useing my mums car everynight for a week or two. im not to sure about a golf now after reading the forums because i wont be using motorways that much and that seems to be the only plus point on diesels now i have no idea what to look at apart from a ST or maybe a corsa VXR if i can find one cheap

Surely you either want a petrol warm hatch or a diesel powered ecohatch? I mean.. why between these two? Odd.

There are literally 1000's of cars you could pick, seems odd to narrow it to a small hot hatch that isn't highly thought of and a dull box with a tractor lump.

You mentioned you haven't got a provisional yet. Do you have a tractor licence?

Well i would prefer a hatchback and carnt imagine a 140 golf being that dull to drive i just thought they looked good and well spec`d for the money didnt really think it being diesl would be that much of a issue

ST's, VXR's and 140 TDI Golf's for a 1st car at 17? Business insurance or not, you are going to crash one of these.

He could be a better driver than you for all you know

Also, if you can afford it, in your position I would go for a Corsa VXR. Many people don't rate them on here due to the chavvy image but they are great fun!

If its only between the ST and Golf, ST every time!

Well I'll be controversial and state a preference - the Fiesta. Golf TDis are for when you've given up on driving, Fiestas are a fun first car.
