Area 51 from Vegas
Discussion
I'm heading out to Vegas for 4 days in July, my biggest regret last time was not doing the whole Area 51 / Rachel / Black Mailbox trip.
Does anyone who has done it before have any tips / suggestions? There is a full day all-inclusive tour ($195 per person) which is a very expensive way of doing it, or obviously we can hire a car and go it alone...however neither of us have driven abroad before and we don't own credit cards, a quick look around suggests we need one with a reasonably high limit to be able to rent.

This site is really good:

Check out the FAQ section in the links down the side. You can get all the info you need there. I used a debit card for car hire and there were no huge scary deposit requests.

I don't have a credit card either. Hired this last week $286(with a $250 retainer) on a visa debit for three days, unlimited mileage with a full tank of fuel.
Ah that's good news, the few I've looked into so far seemed to need a credit card. Which company did you use? As we would only be doing a days rental one of our Visa Debit cards should cover things adequately.I've done this, best part of my trip to Vegas
It's quite a hike from LV though, and the road isn't very exciting. Easy to find Rachel and the Little A'le'inn, and the Black (white) mailbox, they're just by the side of the main road. I took one of the back 'dirt' roads and ended up at one of the gatehouses, which was literally in the middle of nowhere, got tailed by a government pick-up and watched by the 'cammo dudes', which was fun. There's a good X-files feel to the area, just stay off anywhere that says restricted and be subtle if taking pics.

I used avis, but I think hertz are similar, most hotels will have a car hire desk.Gassing Station | Holidays & Travel | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
