Transferring a private number plate to a friend
Discussion
Morning all,
I'm looking to buy a car off a friend, but he's not going to have time to remove his private number plate in time. Therefore I assume I'll become the owner of that plate?
So what's in involved to get him his plate back and put on retention. Are there additional fees involved doing it this way? Or just the usual retention fee?
Thanks in advance.

£105 fee to put the plate on retention for a year.
Whoever is the current registered keeper can apply to put the plate on retention, DVLA will then send you a new tax disc, V5 and MOT.
It doesn't really matter which way you do it, i.e. friend could apply for a new V5 etc and then when it arrives transfer the car over to you or you could apply for a new V5 if the plate & car is transferred over to you, at this stage you can name your friend as the grantee of the plate.

Thanks for the info. I will need to name my friend as a grantee as he's not in the country to sort out the paperwork, just to sign the V5 over.... complicated story. Is there a fee to make my friend grantee of the plate again?Whoever is the current registered keeper can apply to put the plate on retention, DVLA will then send you a new tax disc, V5 and MOT.

Surely there's no need to put it on retention?
Just apply to transfer it over to his new car?
I believe that would work also, I was assuming that his friend was keeping the plate on retention as I have just been through the same process when part exchanging a car with a private plate that I didn't want transferred on to my new car.Just apply to transfer it over to his new car?
Bugger, just found this on the DVLA website... No idea when he'll next be back in the country....
"The grantee can add or change the nominee details at any time or at the same time of assigning the personalised registration to the nominee’s vehicle at a DVLA local office.
Complete the retention document and enclose the £25 fee. The grantee must sign the document."

As I understand it, no. I'm not at that stage in the process yet, but my retention document states "The assignment fee has already been paid" so I'd assume I'd just have to name the grantor. There is a new system with the DVLA that they don't seem to push that much, but it's for situations just like this..
You can fill in your details on the v5 for the car, and also fill in another form which goes along with the V5, which both get sent off together. You will get the V5 back in your name, and he will get a retention document, charge is £105.
It's for situations just like this, so you don't have to wait '6 weeks' for the plate to be taken off and v5 to come back!
