I have a k&n in mine and use the k&n cleaning kit which has a soapy cleaner and the correct oil to treat it with.
I think it may depend if the filter is foam or cotton, if foam i think petrol will be ok but not sure if it will damage the cotton type like the k&n filters..

If it's a K&N or other cotton filter get a cleaning kit, i wouldn't do it with petrol soap and water do just fine!

Halfords do a K&N Recharger kit which is specially designed for the paper type filter..(The red ones)..It has a cleaner which can be washed off and the correct oil..(RED)..to seal it up again..You can use petrol or soap and water on the mesh type but i would use the correct applications for the paper type..It was around £20 and there is enough for a few cleans and re-seals..I used the cleaner on my mesh type but have no use for the oil if anyone wants it?...Cheers..Ziga

Mines a mesh filter and needs a light spray with oil..The bottle in the kit has a spout and it makes a right ole mess if you try to use that..As i discovered on a previous car!!..I thought it was bleeding..eek

I just do mine with petrol and then apply sone WD40 to get it sticky again.

The big foam ones have gone in washing machine (while the missus is out of course...)

I do the same as Adam, waste of money this K&N oil and cleaning stuff. Its only job is to water proof it and where it's at on a wedge isn't going to get that wet .
Especially as most don't go anywhere near rain drops anywaylaugh

For my sins I ended up at one point specifying air filters for a car manufacturer. We looked closely at oiled foam/cotton filters; they're not as efficient as paper filters but have lower flow restriction - no surprise there, but the oil on them is crucial; they filter by dust particles sticking to the oil ('tackifier' they call it, not oil...) WD40 will not do the job.
