Mounting a camera in my Impreza...

Hi,

I want to mount a camera in my Impreza for track days and what have you, however, I don't have a roll cage or head rests with the thin metal bars (I have seen a few that clamp round the head rest posts). Also, Javelin track days, who I use, won't allow suction mounts.

Ideas? I have a hand held camera, so ideally a mount for this. If not I may need to get some kind of kit...

Suction mount or 3m sticky bases, several options. Ive had mine stuck to the outside of the car, solid as a rock!! I believe you can also buy clamps for them too. Plenty of adjustment so maybe to the rear screen and then adjust the angle to point straight?

Cool. How do you check whats being filmed. I ask because they don't seem to have view finder screen on the back of the unit.

Do you have a glass sunroof? You can suction mount onto the underside of that.

You can buy a hero 2, which is more expensive, but can have an LCD "bacpac" bought for it.

Only downside of the Hero is no screen. But quality and what you can do with it is by far the best I've seen without spending a fortune!!

You can use the screen on the hero 1 if you buy it...

Don't use suction mounts unless you have been specifically told you can - you run the risk of being banned. Most TDOs do not allow them.

Yes, I know this. Thanks. I am thinking of screwing a mount to the dash.

Do you have a 3 gauge pod in the centre of your dash (clock replacement)? That would probably be my choice if I had to screw a mount in somewhere so that I could replace easily without too much damage.

The only alternative I can think of would be to fabricate some sort of mount bolted to the rear parcel shelf and use a camera that has a zoom to get your field of view. I have mounted a standard resolution bullet cam to my sun visor in the past (track day at Spa in November) using cable ties but that had a remote DVR for recording (stuffed into centre console cubby) and meant I had to angle the rear view mirror at a 75 degree angle to get a clear view. You need to make sure your mount does not transmit body and engine noise to the camera through any hard materials that have no damping.

Do the rear seats have normal headrests? If so then just use those and zoom in past the front seats.
