Hi all smile

I have got to go down to Basildon, Essex in March to do my CompEx course (5 day course). The two closest hotels to the training centre are a Holiday Inn and a Premier Inn.

Which of the two would you choose, and why?

Ive stayed at the Holiday Inn at Carrow Road, Norwich and thought it was fairly decent tbh. Also, stayed in a Premier Inn in Port Lethen, Aberdeen. Wasnt too bad, but IMO didn't think it was as a good.

Cheers

Holiday Inn, or an HI Express?

Holiday Inn's sometimes have a gym, pool etc. Premier Inn won't, and are more comparable to a HI Express.

I doubt anyone on PistonHeads has ever stayed at either of those two chains. smile

Isn't the HI a fair bit dearer? Is there a pub on the Premier Inn site? All things being equal I'd go for the HI - it should be a bit better than a PremierInn.

I've stayed in both, both were very clean and much of a muchness. Cheap basic accommodation, had no complaints about either.

Premier Inns normally have some sort of Steak House type restaurant attached and they are normally pretty good when you are stopping over, Holiday Inn =?

I am assume it's this one? http://www.holidayinn.com/hotels/us/en/basildon/se...

It's nicer than a premiere Inn and has bar, resturant and room service iirc.

It's also next to Festival Leisure Park or "Bas Vegas" as it's locally know and has a Nandos, TGI Friday, Pizza Express, Chicago Rock Cafe, Frankie and Benny, bowling, cinema, two nightclubs and bars

I stayed in thar particular HI just over a year ago, the rooms weren't that great, if it hasn't been refurebed in the past 12 months I would not pay a premuim over most PIs if it was my own money.

Of topic, but recently I was speaking to Barclaycard and the agent (somewhere in India) wanted to identify me from one of my card transactions.

He said, "Mr Manks, in December you stayed in one of Britain's best hotels. Can you name it?

I was thinking Dorchester, Savoy, Ritz and was sure I hadn't stayed in any of them.

"Nope", I said, "don't know".

"But Mr Manks you must recall staying in one of the UK's top hotels? It's in Tonbridge."

Me: "You mean Premier Inn don't you".

He did.

Avoid the Travel Lodge. I stayed there after a heavy night at Bas Vegas. Not good.

We just stayed at PI at Gatwick before we went on holiday last week. It looked like the room had been recently updated, flat screen, nice new desk and bed furniture, however, rather than radiators, they had a heater system above the doorway which was crap. We had it turned up to 27 and 28 degrees, and there was just no heat whatsoever coming out. They offered us a room change, but they all seemed the same, so we kept the room, and got a refund in the morning.

TBF, that the first time we've ever had a problem. We usually get the rooms when they're reduced so can't really complain...

I like Premier Inns. I use them all the time because my employer has an account with them. They are always clean and comfortable and you always know what to expect. I have only ever stayed in a Holiday Inn once - the one at Liverpool Albert Docks. I was at a gig with a mate and we got a twin room for about £60 through Late Rooms. I was pleasantly surprised.

I would rather stay in kennels than a Travelodge though.

I have been to Preier Inn East Mayne and Festival Park - both are OK.

Festival Park has loads of food palces next to it and a Cinema I think so if you need time to kill prob best off going there.

Having stayed in both Premier Inns and HI's they both tend to be clean, modern with good size rooms. Also if there are any problems they deal with it pretty quickly.

I stayed in a PI once and the room I had been allocated smelt strongly of smoke. They moved me no problem and gave me a £5 drinks voucher to use in the pub attached the hotel.

There is a new PI in Brentwood (old Amstrad building), which is a somewhat nicer area to stay, its only about 20 minute drive, plenty of places to eat in the high street etc

Gotta be better then spending a week in Chavsville

There is also a Holiday Inn in the same area
