Hi! Last night an unfortunate thing happened! On travelling on a road I use nearly everyday of the week I was court doing 45 in a 30! Bummed to say the least! Not so much because of the Fixed Penalty implications but because of my momentary lapse of concerntration. These are the first points I have collected and hopefully the last for a good while!! My question is 'How long does the 3 points remain on my licence? and will this affect my insurance premium'. I have been told various different things as regards to this and would really like to know where I stand.

Thanx.

The points will remain active on your Licence for 3 years for purposes of Totting.

Four years before you can have them expunged.

Insurance Co's require you to notify them of such infringements and it will be up to the individual Co as to what loading they will impose. Gather some do, some don't, on first one.

Riccardo..

Any penalty points on your licence will stay there for a minimum of three years. However, the points remain on your licence for a further 12 months due to any outstanding proceedings at which time you may then apply to the DVLA to have them removed. Any further prosecutions during the initial three-year period will therefore be added to the existing points.

You will only need to inform your insurance firm of the points for the next 3 years.

Some firms will had 5% to your premium for having 3 points, some will increase it more. Others don't have an increased premium for anything under 6 points. It's very individual to each insurance company, I'm afraid.

One thing is for certain; make sure you inform your current insurers immediately of the new points as failure to do so may render your policy null and void, especially in the event of a claim. Insurance firms are quick to take money off you, but when it's time to pay back, they will look for lots of ways to lesser the amount due to you.

Thanks guys for the info! Not exactly what I wanted to hear but........!! I guess that puts my new motor on hold for a while then!!!
What really p***ed me off was that there where 4 of us travelling at the same speed and 'in my opinion' because I was the 'young guy in the sportscar' I was the offender who was asked to pull over. I know I did wrong however and there is no excuses for that. I just see people do the most rediculous things on our roads and get away with it. I guess this is where 'Luck' has a part to play!!

Nevermind, Live and learn!!!

Thanks for your help.

I almost forgot!!!!

Seeing as you are the guy's in the know!!!!!!!.....
Could you clear a few other matters for me too!??

I was told by a friend of mine a while back that commercial drivers actually have bonus points on their licence. My understanding is 2. Basically because commercial motorists are far more likely to tot up points and that driving is their livelihood. Is this '2 additional point system' true?
Also I know of a few reasonably high powered individuals who have accumulated points on their licences and wandered what this does to prospective job applications etc. I am self employed and due to 'work overload' am considering taking a couple of years out to help some other b***er make more money!!! Potentially I am looking at Car sales. Would my newly acquired points affect my application?

Thanks.

Hi mate..
Again depends on the company. Some firms require clean driving licences, whilst othes allow minor blips; ie: 3-6 points for speeding.

Some firms take a firm line with drink driving convictions, dangerous/careless driving etc, but with the amount of speed camera activations nowadays the workforce of the UK would soon be able to fit into a 32 seater coach, if a clean licence was the requirement for employment.

12 points is the max for any drivers, commercial or otherwise. However, there are exceptions to the rule and it depends on each case and it's merits. I've know people with 15 points on their licence and have retained it due to the fact that other peoples welfare and employment depends on his/her ability to drive.

Always wondered why?

Is the stigma of having the points shown on your licence for a further year supposed to be an extra punishment?
