I have just bought another fto as a weekend car and am looking for a decent sports exhaust. I had a Blueflame plus decat on my last one, which was brilliantly built but lacking in the sound department. Any ideas which ones perform well and sound awesome:-) have seen a lot of Hoffman mild steel exhausts in eBay but have never heard of them before????

Stay away from anything mild steel - it will rot and rust like a factory exhaust. Stainless steel is the way forward. Avoid HKS too - they sound good, but many of their systems are mild steel also.

I would try googling some Japanese aftermarket part shops, they sell parts categorised by make and model so you can see what is out there for the FTO. I used to know of a bloke that had one local to me, had a generic Japanese cannon style 5" single exit exhaust, it was stupidly loud and fairly toneless - when the car was not broken down that is! It might be a case that the FTO just lacks a nice output note - some cars, no matter what exhaust you put on them, will always sound flat or harsh.

I think the FTO can sound very nice (biased obviously). The V6 is never going to sound as loud and impressive as a Lambo V12 or an LS V8 but with the right exhaust it has a nice bassey, raspy tone and the 8,000rpm helps.

Personally think most of the massive 5inch chav exhausts sound utter crap and although everyone on the owners club will recommend Zigens and the like I wouldn't. I love my blueflame because it's subtle at lower speeds (so I don't sound like a tit driving through little villages) but sound clean and lovely at 5k rpm and above.

But each to their own smile

Ignore the dodgy quality

Eurgh even more confused now! Had a Blueflame and de-cat on my previous fto and although it did sound good when caning it, it was just too quiet when not trying to go flat out. As the car won't be a daily driver I am after something just a little more obnoxious!!!

If you just want outright obnoxious, I'd see if there is a Buddyclub Spec III system available for the FTO - it's one of the least silenced catback systems I can think of, I've heard them on Civic Type Rs and they sound absolutely wild, you will be setting off car alarms everywhere you go. Definitely not recommended for a car that you have to do any long trips in, as you will have a fuzzy head and feel sick when you get out! wink

as already mentioned, get over to ftooc.org and have an ask about to see what people reckon.

there are a few breakers on there who might be able to sort something out for you - Steve at S&S spares might even still have the system off my old Version-R - custom 2.5" decatted system with "tasteful" sabre power backbox.

the 5zigens are pretty awesome but VERY expensive and a bit chavvy,

HKS are fine until they fall apart - baffles rust and joints corrode

there are pleanty of makes to choose from blueflame and mongoose being better and slightly cheaper than the above.

nice to see that someone is still bothering with the much neglected V6 - not many around anymore, mine got scrapped because the entire underside had rusted (been undersealed every year). it actually folded in half when it got lifted up at the breakers.

did you go GPX or GPvR for the Mivec or di you stick with the GR?
i have had all 3 (manual and Tiptronic) over the years. great little car, dont see why Mitsubishi never sold the FTO in the UK. if i could find a good unmolested manual version-R again i would buy it in a heartbeat.

if you have no joy over on FTOOC.ORG give me a shoult and i'll see whos still on there that might be more help.

Dave.

Cheers for the info! Having had a manual gr a few years ago I've decided to go for the automatic (gr) this time. Crazy how cheap they are now? Paid £400 for a 96' model, 80000km decent condition. And insurance is cheaper than my E36 compact???

Have been offered a cat back long life stainless system for only £40 so may go with that and see what it sounds like? Will def de-cat it. Love the little FTO and it's v6 lump, it's not super quick but sounds awesome, does decent mpg and in my eyes looks awesome!!

You could always fit a blueflame system but then add an electric butterfly valve cut-out for when the mood takes you...

Invidia are a decent name - they mainly crop up in S2000 discussion. Have a look at some videos of their stuff on youtube, try and find out what you can. If it's well priced, I'd be tempted to have a pop.

as mastodon said, invidia are a well known make around the other jap marques. make sure it is stainless not mild and you should be onto a winner.

i doubt it will be a custom system designed for the FTO though - probably an invidia backbox mated to a custom system that someone has had made.

As the back box was only £30 I could not resist, should be with me on Wednesday and as long as fitting isn't too difficult it should be straight onsmile

Picked up the backbox and went to fit it yesterday but it's from a gpx, where mine is the gr. So it didn't match up, gutted as the backbox is mint! So next question, if I buy a centre part of the exhaust from a gpx will this mate up to my cat?? So I can then fit the invidia backbox?

There shouldnt be any major difference between gr and gpx systems - get yourself down to a custom zorst makers, give them the backbox and get them to make the rest up.
