.....a Porsche Driving Experience day? These ones. Are they any good and are they worth the money. Done a bit of track driving in the past and was interested to find the Caymans limits in a safe environment. Do the instructors really push you?

Yes worth doing, yes worth the money. Do the instructors really push you? No, it's mostly about blowing smoke up your ass and making you in love with the Porsche marque. But there are much worse ways to spend £250, you'll learn some genuinely useful stuff.

Thanks Manks. I may give it a go but would have like to have been pushed quite hard to get the most out of me and the car.

If you want to be pushed hard then they will no doubt oblige. But if you haven't done this before you'll probably find it hard enough work just taking in everything you're being told.

Also, speaking personally, I find that at Porsche's track I drive better and faster when I am driving intelligently, rather than hard.

I got the 911 version for Christmas, so I'm looking forward to doing this myself, but what I can say is that when I went on a "You Drive" experience last year (another present), I got 35mins in a 911 as the "ice hill" was out of action. whistle
My instuctor gradually started encouraging me - so I responded. They won't let you turn the PSM off on the track, but he let me go hard enough to reach the "outer edge" of the stability control (everything in sport mode) and melt all four Michelin PS2's ... and I was sweating when I got out! hehe

What I learnt was to find the absolute limits of the car, then step back a notch and work on the smoothness and cornering lines to go even faster. clap I don't know if it was "smoke" he was blowing - but he said that I had the right aptitude / attitude and only a Porsche instuctor was going to get much more out of the car ...

Of course by the time I got home I was besotted and the Boxster S was yesterdays news - so I had to go and buy a 997 ... smile

Matt, have a look at Andy Walsh's www.Carlimits.com he'll let you push as far as you like and a bit more ;-)

alternatively, Hirsute Hugh from Cadence is highly recommended on Blatchat:

Thanks Peter. I have done a course with Andy when I had my Westfield. It was very good too. I just fancy thrashing someone else's metal and not mine this time. wink

You're not really going to get the trash it because the track is too small! E.g. You can't go beyond 7k rpm in 3rd in the RS.

Do it once for free, or one of the cheap courses and it is worth it. I did a cheap one and learnt more than I did on the expensive course, the instructor was better on the cheaper course too. It's pot luck really.

I'm an 'instructor' for these sort of things at work, and unless you're totally crap then I will blow smoke up your arse. The vast majority of people are in fact totally crap, so congratulations on being half decent hehe
