How to work out mpg?

Hi guys just a quick question how do
I calculate my cars mpg?

MPG stands for miles per gallon.

Work out how many miles you've driven, and divide it by the number of gallons of fuel you have used. There are 4.55 litres to the gallon.

Now sit and wait for the more comedic answers...

It's easier to calculate if you measure between fill-ups at the pumps.

You keep a track of each time you put fuel in and it gives you your average over a period of time.

1. Fill your tank until you can't get any more fuel in.

2. Reset your trip computer.

3. When nearly empty, go back to the garage and repeat step one.

Keep a record of how much fuel you put in. Divide how far you have driven by how much fuel you put in.

The above method is the best for week by week (well, tank by tank) monitoring of mpg.

The actual formula is:
Miles driven(from trip computer) divided by (litres put in from receipt/4.55)
Which will give you mpg.

If that's a bit too much faff, and you're not enough of a nerd to set up an excel spreadsheet to do it for you, then there are smartphone apps to do it for you.

OP is probably struggling with the concept as I've not met many Scots who would want to spend enough to fill their tank to the brim.... (they are obviously lovely otherwise )

Similar to mine, except I'm ranging 44-48 MPG per fill up, with a mean of 45.1 over 12 fill up since sept 2011 and an average fuel cost per mile of 13.7p

To those with the massive spreadsheets- you are sad. Very sad.

Don't worry about fking mpg, just put fuel in and drive the car. When it's empty, put more fuel in and repeat process.
