Just had the car in the dealer again, mainly because the new brake discs had warped, but also the day before it went in the red cog came up for 5-10 seconds and I was warned to reduce acceleration(just parking at the time). After it went the system said no faults and it drove fine.
The dealer has run diagnostics and has asked for permission to remove the gearbox, as they suspect it needs a clutch. The clutch was done less than 5k miles so I refused.
I'm picking it up tomorrow, any thoughts. Should I leave it and see if it happens again? If I ignore it and it later fails will the warranty be valid?
Is there a recommended procedure for bedding in the discs? The dealer is claiming evidence of me getting them too hot. Normal driving this time of year, no track days or heavy braking from high speeds, so no way I got them too hot!
Any thoughts/opinions/experience?

Brake bed-in procedure:

70mph - brake hard down to 10mph (NOT to a stop). Drive for 1/2 mile to cool the discs. Repeat 3 times and then drive to cool the discs. This is the discs now bed in properly. Warping is very hard to do on M discs, in fact youd struggle to do it even on an intense track session. Most likely the discs were not fitted correctly ie. the hubs were not cleaned off before fitting the new discs or something similar. Did you fit new pads at the same time?

As for your other symptoms. Like a few other M-ers you should try the battery route or water in the boot check. From your findings just post up here again and we'll see whats next.

Also, ask how they can susoect a clutch? Have they checked the percentage of clutch adjustment? Should be a very low percentage if its only done 5k on the new clutch.

I don't have any personal experince of it I'm an M3 man however I've read plenty on the clutch release bearing and lubrication issues.

Apparently BMW don't recommend to change the bearing if new clutches are fitted but there's suggestions that it should be as it's lubrication dries out. Wonder if this could be what's happening with you. New clutch fitted same release bearing and now it's playing up?

Just a thought.

Bearing comes as part of the clutch kit. Wouldnt make any sense not to fit it. Also the bearing issue wouldnt cause these codes, only judder or clutch failure.

No probs as said was just a thought. Hope you get it sorted OP. New clutch after 5K is obviously something not right.

I suspect you are right about the fitting of the brakes, otherwise they wouldn't have been so quick to agree to replace them. I will ask them about the percentage of clutch adjustments, sounds obvious thing to check. I suspect I would be better trying another dealer next time it happens, as they have only got one mechanic trained to work on M cars so he is not likely to change his tune. Probably not trained to think, just do what a computer tells him.
Thanks

Not an expert on m5s but on the m3 a lot of diagnosed brake disc warp can often actually be the piston/caliper setup being dirty and inefficient, giving very similar symptoms. Just another thing to consider.

Get it fixed and get rid, best ring I ever done was selling my M5, hope things work out either way.

Had the same issue with the discs they replaced thankfully.
