yes i has this car in saloon with the quattro drivetrain.
I drove it very hard for about 60,000 miles
my findings
Warped brakes easily,
Quattro drivetrain plus turbo lag = slip the clutch to keep on boil = knackered clutch - but still driveable at 60,000!
Seats were comfortable
Car handled well
Drove it around europe on a 2500 mile trip over 7 days and it was fine
Bit susceptable to feeling wheel balance shimmy from rear so must be balanced on good machines.
Wing mirror housings are expensive when oncoming cars smash them off
Michelin ps2's were the best tyre- the pirelli p zero rossos were terrible
Suspension was quite hard
I got the 06 TFSI version next and found it a better suspension set up with more power so no need to slip the clutch- however gearbox was rebuilt twice in first year due to synchro problems.
Personally I'd go for the 06 tfsi 220bhp quattro if given a choice

Thanks for the replies. Have seen a few on AT for between £5-6k with decent mileage. Interior isn't to everyones taste but our other car is a Mk1 Golf so the interior will feel lovely and modern when we get in.

One medium-large female Rottweiler and a female Bulldog. Not very big boots?I used to have one and really liked it. I bought the Audi as it fulfilled most of my requirements and still looked "sporty" and less like a company car. I did about 30,000 miles with no problems.
The main criticism I'd have is that the boot wasn't very wide, due to the sides being panelled inside the line of the wheel arches. It also felt quite a bit slower than my previous 180bhp Leon at low revs, but once above 2500rpm it was great and handled like a much smaller car.

I had an 04 1.9D for 5 years. Drove it bloody hard and it never failed to deliver. Everything was rock solid and reliable and only had the usual servicing and sundry expenses in that time. Very economical. I had a big dog and 2 kids and it stood up well to all.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Check it for size, depends how the dogs travel. I've got a couple of large GSD's and I wouldn't want to do a long journey with them in the back.
