Like many people, I suspect, I use my Tiptronic S in 'half-and-half' mode. So, I leave it in D and over-ride it with the steering wheel buttons when I want to change down for the engine to assist the brakes: 'engine braking'.

Is there any reason I shouldn't do the latter?
Get a quote on a Tip rebuild vs. new brake rotors/pads.

I seldom downshift my manual cars for extra engine braking and the brakes last for a long time. In one car I hve 86K miles on the original rotors/pads.

Sincerely,

Rockster.

However, I am trying to establish unequivocally that Tiptronic engine-braking is wrong.
What makes you think this is 'wrong'? Are you saying that you believe it is damaging in some way?

I see no reason why you shouldn't 'change-down' using the manual control of your tip' 'box upon, say, corner entry or aiding slowing down-hill, into a 30 zone or whatever. I certainly do. Of course, modern thinking within the IAM would suggest using the mantra "Gears to go, Brakes to slow", i.e. don't change down until you've used your brakes to slow you down to the speed you want and then select the gear (or let the auto decide) that is appropriate for the new road-speed. This isn't a rule that I totally agree with nor practise - it was drummed into me when I did the bike Advanced Course and I felt it was inappropriate to slow from say, 70mph, to 30mph in sixth gear on a lumpy twin, and then change all the way down the 'box to maybe second...

Sorry, drifted off topic a bit there!
