Last night, the 10th at about 11.45pm, travelling north on the M25 between the A13 and A127 junctions, we all came to a complete standstill due to what must have been a major prang up ahead. I counted about six plod cars, two ambulances and two or three flatbed trucks heading up the hard shoulder.

It's concerning that people can manage to get it so terribly wrong at a time of night where there's fairly light traffic, good visibility, no rain, etc, etc. Hope everyone got out OK, but I fear for those involved given the state of the armco and the wreck on the hard shoulder

Hats off to plod: spent about 50 minutes with the engine off, but that's pretty good considering what looked like a lot of clearing up to do. Not a job I want.

Sounds like the carriageway was shut for 50 mins to clear the debris etc

Pies has it right: carriageway was completely closed for around an hour.

Might have fallen asleep at the wheel at that time of night.

I was sat near the crash on the 4th at Kegworth, counted too many ambulances (I stopped at 6), 6 fire-engines and too many police cars to count. In the end they turned us around - it is surreal to drive the wrong way down the motorway.

Tbh, I don't know why. They simply moved the traffic jam from one place to another and slowed my journey more than if I'd simply sat and waited it out.

Could have been fun as well, I have full camping gear (on way back from PF) so could have got the cooker/chair out and had a cup-of-tea or some tea while on the motorway Of course I doubt I would due to if the traffic started moving suddenly, but the idea is there

"I was proceeding" along the A14 eastwards at about 4am on Thursday morning when a car approached me in the outside lane of my carriageway. It was fairly quiet or I'd have been in the outside lane and heading directly for the car. I phoned the police, of course, who said they were already aware and had sent someone out. You cope with it at the time, but later you realise what could have happened.

So yes, people can get it really wrong at any time of the day. Keep your eyes open!
