I really like the idea of having a nicely powder coated/painted chassis, so the plan was simple. Spend a few hours cleaning with a degreaser/hot soapy water to remove the grime, then cover in clear waxoyl or re-paint (hadn't really decided which).

After an hour of scrubbing, the grime was going nowhere, i should have realised after 5 minutes it was actually waxoyl rolleyes, so had a bit of a scrape to expose the white powder coating, which looks in good condition so the plan is now to use TFR with a jet washer to remove the rest of the waxoyl, but before i start does anyone have any further advice(Spongy/Scotty??)
Thanks
Bob

You need something like por15 marine clean....or thinners or petrol hehe

That stuff is not funny to completely remove, worth it though.

Well Gunk failed, so we'll see how the TFR fairs, if it's another fail, i'll try the por 15 and if that fails, it will be petrol......and a matchhehe

Don't know if you ever cross the channel, but if you do there's a magic degreaser for sale at Wibra in Belgium and Holland called Dasty for 2 euro. Wibra is like the cheapest store ever but they have the sole license of selling Dasty in Europe. It has been advised as wonder degreaser by housewives, car clubs, boat owners, you name it. And it really does work. There is even a Dasty fanclub apparently biggrin

The petrol actually permormed the best all joking aside, its just not nice when it goes in your eyes and is stinging the hell out of your hands hehe

Bilt hamber also do a good degreaser but i think the por 15 marine clean is better.

Dont use thinners like i started to do cos it ruins the good powder coat,i used marine clean and loads of elbo grease, and i mean loads.warm water did the trick in some places and even halfords own brand engine cleaner worked on some chassis bits.Good luck sir........it is worth it in the endbiggrin

Cheers i'm planning a Spongy weekend, although i suspect you've got more patience than me, so if all else fails, i'll waxoyl the bits that have been stripped and pay someone to do it next year, which is really going to pcensoreds me off, as just for once i'd like to have done something myselfrolleyes

As also said, a few weeks off the road and in the air is more than worth it to see what condition the chassis is in. Did mine last winter and was glad I did as some of the powder coat had come away and was treated and re-painted. will be doing the same again soon to check on the situation.

(Personally I'd steer clear of Waxoyl and the like as whoever applies it could be doing so over a rusty chassis and there's no easy way to see what's going on underneath.)

Spent 4 hours this weekend trying to remove the waxoyl - it's so thick the TFR would hardly touch it, so had to resort to gentle scraping with various implements, which i had been warned not to do, but there was no real alternative.

Anyway just before i was about to chalk fcensoredK on it, Mrs P offered me a brillo pad, which, when dipped in TFR worked brilliantly, so quite looking forward to getting back under her this week.

Also i've got the Tam on a single axle stand (rear o/s)and intend on putting another one under the front later in the week, in affect leaning the car to one side - will this be a problem?
Thanks
Bob

I wouldn't do that. Raise either the back of the car or the front of the car, not the side. I also wouldn;t leave it on one axle stand for long, if any time at all to be honest, but two is ok.

Ok thanks for the tip, i'll get one under the opposite side, or remove the single one altogether until i'm ready to work on it again

Agree with above, don't mess about under a car with one axle stand!

It will kill you if it drops for any reason!

If your working under the car to do the chassis. get 4 axle stands and make sure its stable, its just not worth the potential deeath.

I've been doing mine whilst the engine is out. I'd get yourself a steam cleaner (I got this one and it seems worthwhile: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AQUA-JET-STEAM-STEAMER-D...

This helps break down the majority of the waxoyl. I've then just picked up som Bilt Hammer Surfex HD today, and it's working really well so far. It's water based so less chance to damaging paintwork etc if you overspray somewhere. Just a case of keep going and dont give up!

Gents, really appreciate the advice, i'll post some piccies at the weekend when hopefully i've have made a bit of progress; the TFR and Brillo pads seem a good option at the moment, i must be patient, repeat, i must be patient, repeat...........
