I'm gonna have to get some tailpipes made for the boat I'm building at some point. (The tailpipes attach to the end of the header shown in this pic - http://www.custommarine.com/images/product/img_hea... ) - and are a couple of feet long, poking out of the back of the boat.

A marine exhaust differs from a car since it's got an outer raw/salt water jacket around the inner tube carrying the exhaust.

Typically, the headers and the risers are made out of 316L, but they are also notoriously unreliable and crack and start leaking with < 100 hours of use.

I think I've solved issue with the headers cracking by finding a pair of cast headers, but I still need to get tailpipes made.

Can anyone suggest a material capable of handling the heat of the exhaust internally, capable also of handling the huge temperature differential between the inner and outer surface and corresponding stress this induces, with corrosion resistance on a par with 316L and that will also polish up nicely externally.

Many thanks
Matt

Thanks for that, I'll research it a bit more.

It looks like 321 could also be a candidate - but apparently suffers the same as inconel ($$)
