hi all. i'm on the verge of reviving a LHD 3000 S for a customer. the car is nearly complete but for a softtop. can anyone of you direct me to a company that can make one from scratch? i don't have the old one anymore, so no pattern to go from. david gerald is trying to get an example but stated they would have liked the old one as a start, no response from mr. venn's office.
all suggestions welcome.

Hi Geert,
I'm doing a nut & bolt job on mine right now and won't need the hood for a while. The bonus is that I'm due to visit David Gerald when I can find time in the next few weeks so could take mine up as a pattern.
Having said that, this is also a copy of the original so what you would get is a copy of a copy. Might be better than nothing though.
Failing that, tunepipe911 has got his 3000S in bits at the moment and he's in Belgium so if you wanted one made "locally" that could be an option (unless it's his you're restoring!).

I know that you can get them from Prestige Autotrim http://www.prestigeautotrim.co.uk/acatalog/TVR_300...

I don't know anyone who has bought one from them though.

Geert,

I'm in Belgium too, as far as I know the frame is a TR6 item, and the vinyl or double duck can be ordered through the site Nigel has posted.

If more info needed, or you would like to come over for measurement or anything, pm me (antwerp area)

No, the frame is not TR6.
IMHO you need to have these made bespoke for the car, I Have yet to see an off the shelf unit that fits properly.

thanks for all your input folks. thank you adrian for replying, but after being in business myself for an odd 30 years of car restoration specializing in scimitars and tvr's................? collegues so to speak.
the frame on this particular car has been made to 3000 S spec completely in stainless steel and the only tr6 bits are the handles and grips (and some odd bits at the back) that go into the front frame when closing the rag top to keep most of the wet out and keeping it steady at the rear.(these might even be MG come to think of it).

what i'm after is a ready made complete top similar to the original pattern and size. this means it will have to look as the original with original measurements for the rear screen for instance, and all the correct tabs and flaps as TVR intended them when they were first manufactured. it would surprise me very much if no established TVR company has kept records/patterns of this item over the years.but i'm beginning to doubt..........
i've sent a message to prestige (thanks for the tip nigel) and will wait to see what they come up with.
to be continued.........

What you need is a "first fit" roof from the original factory pattern. Shame you,ve run out of experts to ask. Sorry about it being a bit dirty, been in my loft for 30+ years.

Geert, not sure why I,m hard to get at, I,ve had several calls this week from the man in US who is selling "Sebring" Grantura, calls from Madagascar, Italy and Malta, along with lots of "can you help me" calls. I thought you were the one hard to get to, I sent you an email in November which you "lost" till it was convenient for you after Xmas when you found it but thats another story.

Compare your nice TVR to an invite to a special event. You could borrow a friends' suit, it may fit, you could buy a very nice one from Marks and Spencer for not much more than £100 which would look ok at least within an inch or two, or you could go to a tailor and have one made to measure.

Would you like a roof 1" too short or 1" too long. First wont fit and second wil be baggy.

I no longer do either old friends or off the peg, sorry. I dont even do 1st fit anymore, only bespoke. A few years ago I received a call form a PHer in exactly your situation ( due to PH name and shame rules lets call him Richard Head ) so very reluctantly I supplied him with a first fit, invoice stating EXACTLY that was what it was and that he would need to have a coach trimmer fit it to his particular car (all 3000S,s differ slighlty.....they are "bespoke" too ). 8 months later after obviously copying it he said it wouldn,t fit and demanded his money back. I offered to fit it to his SATISFACTION but he refused that offer and took me to court. Longish story short we met in court and judgement was awarded against him and he was advised not to come back until I had failed to fit to his SATISFACTION. The following day I received a VERY abusive phone call from him and he has never been seen again. That was very stressful and I try to avoid stress, I saw what it did to my father. He married a girl 30 years his junior and died late one night in bed suffering from stessful activity, or at least that is what she called it.

Happy to make arrangements for you to have a roof fitted or try the friends root, Rudy,s roof is an excellent factory original (I sold him the car) but 35 years of life it is not really the best fit on is car but a good place to start.

Good luck sTeVeR.

ps, my ex Rolls Royce trimmer spends winter in Brunei working for the Sultan so be prepared to wait!

pps, over many years I have invested much time and money aquiring the correct parts, patterns and knowledge and actually still DRIVE classic TVR,s so still gathering knowledge so YES the pattern is good enough, IMHO.
