Hi All, looking for some advice and thoughts as i am not sure if i should have Paint protection fitted or not?
The Sag is going up to Surface & Design soon and i need to make a decision about paint protection.
Bearing in mind how much the paint is per litre frequent front end resprays are out of the question however will I be taking away the stunning looks of the Sag and the paintwork with a protective shield?

Any comments welcome in paticular to those who have had it fitted, also is Paintsheld the best/market leader?

IMHO it looks crap close up, you always seem to get little air bubbles that look terrible no matter how well it's been fitted, dulls the colour as well.

Neither Armourfend or Paintshield work perfectly in my experience. Each have their own additional issues as well.

You pays your money, you make your choice.

I went with Armourfend when I resprayed mine on the basis that something is better than nothing.

This stuff can not be put on fresh paint, you have to wait a few weeks to be sure the paint is strong enough.

I hate the stuff, I have seen the mess it (can) make when you take it off.

Also if you curb the front etc think about what will need to be done to fix it ????

I was thinking about applying this once i get my car back from its respray.

The painter did say whats mentioned above in that when removed it can take paint off, it also doesnt look great close up.

I'm a bit concerned as i'd like to do a few trackdays and i do use the car as it was destined to be so dont want the front peppered with stone chips.

Not sure what to do really...

As I said, neither are ideal. You have to review the pros and ins of both and make your own choice.

Only real advice I can give

I've had my 500 fully resprayed twice in 12 years though I don't mind a few stone chips, if the cars being used its going to get stonechipped, it's part of owning and using a TVR.

though it is a bugger after it's just been resprayed madlaugh

Think my Sag (Cascade Indigo) has Armourfend fitted at the factory, so it's 5 years old and 30k miles old. It definitely takes some of the colour benefit away close up, but compared to my un-protected T350, which looked like it lost a battle with the council's gritter, I think it's worth it to protect your investment. It seems to do a good job of protecting the paint. Polish it as much as you can, it doesn't shine like paint.

From a distance, you can't tell it's Armourfend, and the Cascade Indigo still looks amazing.

Had paint shield on all 3 of my Tivs, can't recommend it enough, have it on my R32 as well. Make sure you are not comparing it to armourfend or venturshild, paint shield was the only one recommended by the factory when they were in business!

I have Paintshield on mine, fitted by the unit in Northampton.

Waited 2 weeks after respray for degassing.

No marks on it whatsoever, and IMO not really noticeable - certainly no air bubbles.

As above make sure you are comparing apples with apples.

Thanks for all your comments and opinions, still in dithering mode I’m afraid but certainly food for thought.

Surface & Design have warned me to wait two weeks for the paint to cure and to be fair after speaking to paintshield they said the same.
I understand that they are the only factory endorsed fitters and their new kits they are producing are supposed to be fantastic and hardly noticeable once fitted.
Especially if i go for the full front or extended kit, standard kit is just the nose and i don't want a line showing even if it is faint! smile

Matt, what did you go for and what type of film as apparently they have Extreme film which is cheaper and self healing film which is supposed to self repair any marks!

I had the extended kit IIRC - it goes up to on top of the front wheels, plus the wing mirrors.

Not sure on the film, it was 18 months ago now, so was never given a choice.

This.

Mine could do with a respray if I'm being fussy. I don't mind a few stone chips - and I hate the line at the edge of the paint shield (whatever brand).

Hi Rob,

More important than paint protection do you need a hard hat for top end protection, like how did you get a front end respray past her indoors? Tell me cos I need to know, me need bits n bobs.

Re the films, dark colours show the chips more but the film edges less, well I think so anyway. I have seen the film on silvers, OMG does it show so no good for Saggy, but if you keep the edge clean it is not so bad and on a dark colour is only there if you "look". Leave it a good few weeks before filming though, you are trapping sovents so allow it to vent. Not sure of the brand names but what is the painted on one? Think I saw it advertised in Evo? I will look later but just got in and I've gotta go out now.

One to watch for is flying exhaust cans...nothing would stop that...

Slightly of topic, but picked up my freshly resparyed t350 from Adrian at tvr body shop yesterday afternoon, car looked amazing. He said the same thing about the paint taking two weeks to properly harden.

An hour into the drive home up the M6 I saw a stone flying towards the front of the car almost in slow motion, followed bya clunk as it hit the nose of the car. Could have cried when I first saw the chip when I stopped for fuel. Nothing I could have done to avoid it but was angry that my flawless car lasted only an hour!!

Anyway the point is after a great drive home and having the car back after 4 weeks, it is now forgotten about. I think with owning a car like this and driving and enjoying it you have to have to put up with a few war wounds, at the end of the day they are only cosmetic and can repaired any time. Mine is never going to be a garage queen and hate the paint protection stuff ( I have it on my exige)

My point is if you are going to put paint protection on either leave it for 2 weeks at S&D while paint hardens or transport it home in a covered trailer. Don't drive it home on a busy motorway on a Friday night!!

Or you do what one of the EVO crowd did and cover it thickly with vasaline for the drive home. Another person I've spoken to wraps the front of his car with clingfilm for trackdays (obviously leaving vents etc open).

Sorry to hear of your woes though.
