With an increase in commuting mileage to 600 a week I'm probably going to have to sell my Golf GTi. I currently average mid 30s on a 60 mile each way commute, so looking to improve that to in excess of 55 if possible.

I'm looking at either a Focus or Golf diesel at 3 years old, 58/09 regs.

What are the main differences between the Focus 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 TDIs in terms of MPG, servicing, common issues (DMFs) and are they cambelt or chain driven? Do they take their miles well?

Many thanks.

1.6 in 110 form is the best of the bunch for MPG and isn't much slower than the others. 100k between cambelts and generally reliable, lots have a dpf though.

1.8 is an older engine and probably a little tougher, but its age shows, thirstier than the 1.6 but only an extra 5 horses. No dpf AFAIK.

2.0 is more powerful, but not as good on fuel as the other two. Due an expensive service at 72k when fitted to Volvos and a rare lump to find in a focus due to the cheapness of the 1.8 and popularity of the 1.6.

I have a 2007 2.0 TDCi Titanium, but things have changed a bit on the Focus since then, certainly in terms of DPFs anyhow. Mine didn't have one but the 1.6 did, but that used a fluid that needed topping up at service time. I think they have moved away from those now but I don't know when the switch took place.

Get over to this site for a more informed look at the Focus diesels: http://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/forum/2-ford-...

As for which one to go for, I had to sell my Octavia vRS, which had the GTi engine, so I feel your pain! I wanted as much performance as I could have with the diesel, so I plumped for the 2.0 and got it remapped. 46mpg average and £130/year road tax. If performance is not so important, I'd agree that the 110bhp 1.6 would be the best all-round choice. We have the 1.6 90bhp Focus at work and they get ragged around all day and still average 47mpg!

1600 & 2000 are both Peugeot sourced engines both are pretty reliable the 72k service is expensive as its when the dpf should be changed but if there is no fault with it then don't change it wink

On the 1600 I would recommend having the oil pick up pipe replaced @ 50k as they are prone to sludge build up which If left will kill the turbo & worse case the engine it's not an expensive job to do but will also require a new sump as taking the old one off will destroy it.

I'm yet to hear of any problems with the 2000cc engine in any of the ford models although have seen a few problems with the peugeots that run the same engine & they are normally very expensive frown

1800cc is an old engine now but it's reliable & is a ford engine

All have dmf's but they seem to last the miles ok

All have cambelts but intervals are 100k or 10 yrs upwards

Tbh it's pointless worrying about dpf or dmf as all the modern diesels run them now
