I have a little bit of an issue with my (petrol) mk2 Mondeo 2.0, late 98 fwiw, its cutting out when both it *and* the weather are cold.

Starts perfectly, idles perfectly. Drive off, get to the end of the road, clutch in and it dies. Bump it (if still rolling) and it'll run but die again on clutch in (I'm getting quite good at heal and toe at the moment). Turn it off, turn it back on and start it and it'll idle *perfectly*. Pull off, next junction, clutch in and it dies again...

Get it warm and no problems, weather being warm and no problems. If it's *really* cold no problems.
I've tried with and without the heated screen on and with and without air-con on, neither make a difference.

It's only a unsweet spot at about 2-4 degrees when it suffers.

Now this hasn't been that much of an issue to ever bother to fix it previously but it seems to be getting worse (the car has 160k on it) and seeing as I have to take things apart this w/e to swap the starter and cruise control cable thought I'd see if anyone had any suggestions of things to check.

One suggestion I read was AFM/MAF dirty (most of the other suggestions seem for the pre-98 Mondeo).

Seeing as I was replacing the starter today I took it off and gave it a careful blast of carb/injector cleaner. Looked for any split hoses etc, couldn't find any. Spark plugs were swapped a week ago along with air filter.

No difference. Although it may have made a difference but because I had the battery disconnected for an hour and the ECU needs to learn how to idle again...

Still, at least I don't have to worry that the starter won't work when it stalls now! wink

Now where did I put the code for the radio...

Sticking Idle Control Valve? Clutch switch sticking? (if it has one).

Idle valve is a possibility but I'd expect it then to do it all the time and it idles perfectly when started. If I'm honest I've put off having a look due to its location!

Clutch switch works (assuming it doesn't have two) as the cruise control turns off when the clutch is pressed in.

Just for anyone who finds this while googling the same issue...

Looks like it was the idle valve. Replaced it in summer and despite the cold weather hasn't done it once since.

Also quite noticeable how it'll now hold at 1500rpm while moving clutch in and drop quickly to idle when stopped whereas it used to be a bit woolly and vague before.
