VW Polo R

I know the WRC version of this is out, but anyone know of any more news or inside knowledge from VW? Last news article was from Auto Express in September saying it was potentially being developed. I like the new Polo and the GTI looks nice, although the DSG gearbox puts me off. A manual Polo R in a couple of years fits the bill for my next car in terms of everything I'm looking for (combo of looks, handling, performance, running costs, good residuals). I love the new Golf GTI but I don't need something as big and being an ex 6N2 Polo GTI owner I'm swayed towards the Polo. If it's crap I'll just go and buy a second hand GT-86 ;-)

There have been a lot of conflicting new articles about it, but the final line from VW was No last time I looked.

i want one for OH but if its 24k+ options and FWD may as well buy a golf GTi

Maybe something coming out off the back of the A1 sport Quattro? There's a rumour that an A1 more mainstream version might come out, maybe a polo R too?

you know a reasonably spec'd golf R with buckets is 43k

It's certainly a great little car on paper, but I almost wonder what it'll compare like to the cheaper and potentially faster rivals!

It is a factor of life, but £24k is nigh on Golf money for a Polo that may well be no more powerful, smaller, maybe less kit and so on. Also ball-park figure for Golf/Focus sized hot hatch from mid noughties, adjusted for inflation.


As for the wages thing, wage inflation for the majority lags behind price inflation by an inconvenient margin.

this is true, in 89 the 20v ur quattro cost 32k, which is 67.5k in today's money, about the same as an RS5 or the new RS4 and about 10k more than a spec'd TTRS with the same engine type

off the top of my head i think my cousin paid 16k for his whale tale cossie when they where launched which is about 40k today so a fair bit more than the focus RS500

if the polo R is 24k that equates to 9K in 84 which is about the same price as a MK1 escort RS Turbo

Yeah I definately would not be buying new. Out of interest I specced the current Polo GTI to the way I'd like it and it was just over 21k. A new Golf GTI you could get close to 40k if I'm not mistaken, it's mental
