What are the thoughts of those who live with the 5GT on a day-to-day basis?

Ignoring the styling (which I appreciate is personal taste), what is it like to drive & park, what is the real world mpg, are there any regrets/niggles?

All comments from owners gratefully received. Thanks.

My boss has one so can add some stuff but not others.

Its very good to drive but feels very big, parking it is a pain in the arse. We have standard size spaces at work and this always seems to fill it to the point he now parks on the end of the row to make it easier.

They are very nice to sit in and be driven. We did south coast to Leeds and it was very comfortable.

His is a 530D and he is very pleased with the economy but couldnt tell you what he actually gets

He loves it but hates the looks. It is one hideously ugly car. I have not met anyone who likes the shape from the outside but the inside is such a nice place to be my bosses attitude is he doesnt care what the outside looks like.

Right then. This could be a long one so excuse me........

Had the 530d variant since the middle of December and I've clocked just over 1k. It is the M sport with a coupe of extras.

Main points are:

Looks - personally I like it. Both inside and out. The inside is a lovely place to be as it is based on a 7 series floor plan so has the same interior and dash layout. The exterior is different but I like it in a kind of Rover SD1 sort of way.

Size - its big. It is a bd to park - top tip number one - get the reversing and side cameras. It is almost impossible to judge the width of the thing in a parallel park. Mrs S struggles with it and the alloy wheels arent long for this world I'm afraid.... On the inside it is a god size for families especially as you can move the back seats around and change the layout versus the boot space with the dividers etc. I've measured the area and, minus the rake, the square area of the boot is a shade under that of our v70, although in practice not as useful for large items without putting r seats down or at least forward. If you have kids in car seats in the back then this is a great car. Our be safe rear facing seats go in easily and don't event touch the seat in front. The rest space is immense.

Performance - pretty good. The 8 speed box is very clever in putting you in the power band of the engine. It cruises very happily all day at 1 lepton. I'd love to try the 550......

Economy - hard to tell, but I did a brim to brim check over the last 450 miles and it averaged at 36 which is a mix of slow motorway (stuck in traffic on M4 at 60), fast motorway and a little around town. On the current around town tank I'm predicting 26-28.

Will add some more to this when I get some more wifi signal.

Right then, back by popular request.

Building on my earlier points:

Interior - as said it is a nice place to be. The seats are very comfy in a Germanic sense. The on board tech is fantastic with I think what must be the best satnav there is. The way all the tech works together is really good - ie a google search for a restaurant that then plugs the address straight into the destination. Aside from the cameras I think it really does have everything you could need.

Negative points - some of these are really picky:

Visibility - probably the biggest issue - its a large car - nose to tail it is the same length as our xc90, maybe more, but without the height to help you park. Coupled to high flanks makes it a sod to part. Not to be sexist but my other hAlf struggles with it.

Instruments - the m sport wheel is lovely but it cuts off the bottom, or the the top, of the display through the middle. Espically if you have the satnav to repeat the instructions in the instrument cluster.

Audio system - the standard system isn't that great for my ears, but that coming from the Volvo dynaaudio and a Lexus mark levinson in the other cars. I'm sure the upgraded systems are good.

Handling - its is good and the sport position sharpens it up nicely but it is a big car - it ain't no 3 series!

Interior materials- they are good, but again coming from the Lexus, they do feel a bit on he cheap side.

That's it for now I think. Will add some more later.

Thanks Skellen, that is really useful. The one thing that can't be avoided is that this is a BIG car. Noted re camera & speakers in particular. Thanks.

I have had various BMW's over the last 20 years and 9 months ago, I went from an E70 X5 35d to a Mercedes CLS250 Shooting brake. Nice car, but pretty boring and I guess I missed the BMWs.

A couple of days ago, I returned to the fold, trading the Merc into Sytner Sheffield for a 5GT 535d. I am impressed. My last 5 was an F10 528i which was nice but for me, the GT is at one end of the scale, a wafting limo and at the other, whilst not a back lane scratcher, is respectfully quick, with everything tightened up in sport or sport +.

300 horses, coupled with shed loads of torque makes for great performance for a big car. The interior is a great place to be. Mine has ivory comfort seats which I previously experienced in my E53 X5 and I forgot just how good they are.

Lots of other toys, including HUD make for a great package. I think they need the 20' wheels to fill out the arches, but I like the look of the GT, a personal thing.....

A step up in quality from my F10 as it's 7 series based, 70 mph is an eerily quiet 1500 rpm, although the loud pedal makes it far too easy to get to licence losing speeds.

It also has estate car flexibility which makes it a great all-rounder, with the seats down, it has more space than a 5 touring.

I suspect I might have this one a bit longer than the Merc :-)
