As some of you may know I'm on three month trip around Asia at the moment, just started last week in India. I have two days left in India before I fly to my next stop - Kuala Lumpur.

Last night I was knocked down by a motorbike and robbed of my handbag containing all my Indian Rupees, all my credit and debit cards and my driving license, my iphone and my brand new camera (along with all my photos so far- mortified).

I'm here with someone else for the next two days but when I fly to KL on Monday i'll be on my own for the next 2.5months.

Ok so I've been taken to hospital and I'm alright, just bruised and grazed, I cancelled all my c.cards and my SIM. Now what on earth do I do for money for the next 10 weeks?

I'll be getting new cards all sent to my partner at home in the next 5-7 days. Essentially all I need is my debit card so I can withdraw cash in all the countries I'll be visiting.

Any advice hugely appreciated her as I've got no clue what to do when I get to KL.

Thanks guys smile

Sorry to hear of your misfortune, that must have shaken you up quite a bit, pleased you are OK..

Do you have any ID at all, ie Passport. AFAIK you can get a relative to wire you cash via Western Union and pick it up at their nearest outlet, until your cards can be mailed to you.

Can the British embassy help as a forwarding address for your Cards?

Last thing, have a word in the Asia forum, see if anyone there can give you some tips or advice on your next destination regarding this.

Good luck anyhow, try not to let it spoil things for you. smile

If under $1000 you don't need ID for Western Union, just answer the security questions I believe

Even when I travel in a safe country I don't carry everything in one bag, I at least put one CC somewhere away from my other cards and ID

sorry to hear about your misfortune. what travel insurance do you have and what emergency assistance does it provide? shame about the camera as the pics are the only things you can't replace.

there are PHers in KL. Berw springs to mind:

perhaps he can assist re: a mailing address to have your card DHL'd over.

one of our directors retired to KL last month, he lives centrally so if you're stuck I can ask if he'll oblige.

Thanks. I have my passport at least. Trust me there are so many "I wish I'd done this" going through my head last night but there's no point in going through that now.

So if I can get cash for the short term, it's really my card that I'm worried about getting hold of. If my partner UPS's it to, say China, which I'll be at in a week, will the Embassy take responsibility for receiving it?

Also, I've told my insurance co. all about situation and have told them that I will be buying an identical camera as soon as possible because obviously I need it for my trip, and I'd bought this camera a month ago after tons of research so I wanted to get the same one again, and Barclays told me they'd look up my model number and decide what they can get hold of, and it might be a similar camera, or vouchers. ?! What? Why can't I just get one in KL where it's probably way cheaper and send them the receipt? If can save them money I don't see what the problem would be.

Nothing much to add, other than sorry to hear about your misfortune.
This is one of the reasons I don't do international travel; too scared of being in a situation like this.
It's a wonder I leave the house in the morning. smile

barclays have banks in china, prob easier to ship it there.

barclays travel insurance is useless, but if you can speak to their loss adjuster you may be able to state your case. if you have the receipt for the stolen camera and will provide the one for the replacement, they will likely accomodate. just don't deal with the admin wonks.

as for safety, unfortunately a tall white blonde sticks out like a country mile when travelling and is a soft target for the ne'er do wells.

my advice would be to learn from it from a safety/security POV but otherwise forget it. you have an amazing trip to look forward to and you could do without the sour taste of yesterday.

^^^^ Good post, Steve. I'm sure that's exactly what she wanted to hear right now. rolleyes

OP, may be best to contact the British embassy where you are - they'll help and point you in the right direction.

The Barclays insurance isn't travel insurance it's home contents - personal possessions insurance - my travel insurance would only have covered me for something pathetic like 100quid with a 75quid excess(!) so it's pointless going through them.

I transferred some cash to the girl i'm in India with online, and she has withdrawn it so ive got some rupees which i can change into ringitt to see me into Kuala Lumpur. I'm only there for 4 days tho, then 3 days in Cambodia, then over to Beijing for about a week, so realistically, by the time my cards come through back home, it'll have to be China that they get sent to.

I don't know if i can contact the Chinese embassy and see what they suggest. It seems pointless asking India if I'm leaving in 48hrs.

Steve, don't worry about it, I'm very thankful that it wasn't much worse because I know it could have been. When i was lying in the road all i could think was that i had to crawl to the gutter because i was bound to get run over if i stayed there (it was 10pm) so i'm just grateful there wasn't a car close behind the bike.

So was the bike part of the mugging, or was it an opportunistic thing?

You're heading in the right direction though, I've been to SE Asia loads of times now and muggings/street crime seems very rare.

They rode up alongside me and grabbed the handbag from my arm, but i had quite a firm grasp of it so they took me with it and i went flying into the road.

I'm sure you're asking yourself the same question, but why haven't you taken out better travel insurance?

Mmmm. Don't know.

I've had countless emails and several shared Facebook posts describing almost the same thing as the OP over the past few months. Some even had a photo of an attractive lady attached. If it wasn't for the similarity between the messages, I would have felt quite sorry for them and their plea for financial assistance.

I'm not suggesting this applies to the OP.

Well the travel insurance was really taken out from a medical POV, because I knew that my personal possessions were covered anywhere in the world up to £2k which is much more than you'll normally get from travel insurance. And I was fully aware of the excesses etc when I bought it. £60 cash isn't that big a deal in the grand scheme of things. I'm more worried about recouping the camera and iPhone costs.

sorry, just read the insurance and assumed. ask your bank first. if you're with first direct or HSBC it'll be easiest. if it's someone small and local, less so.

thinking about it, depending how soon the replacement arrives, the best bet would be to DHL straight to the airport at your point of entry in china.
