Our wildlife is really struggling at the moment, particularly the song-birds. In some regions their food souces have been covered in ice and snow for a few weeks now; that coupled with -16 degree temperatures is really sapping their reserves.

There are small things we can all do to make a big difference though.

Food scraps scattered around the garden could literally save their lives at the moment.

Fatty foods are best, such as the fatty offcuts of bacon chopped up, are an excellent source of calories.

Have been doing this for the last few weeks, along with the peanuts/fat-ball hanging just out of reach of the local squirrel.

Yep, been throwing out more seed than normal (feed a dozen pheasant or so who come around), and bread, and tomorrow they will get the prawn crackers......

Hell, yesterday a fox was outside the fence, so I took down some raw chicken wings for him.... And some veg for the bunnies.

BTW, anyone know what deer eat!?!?

Deer will eat any vegetation from green shoots to holly, however since they can nibble at height, they probably don't need your help.

However I'm sure some hay would be appreciated, not least by seed-eating birds.

We've had some greedy blackbirds at the chickens' food. They've been chasing them around all morning. Chickens are bigger than blackbirds, but not quite as good at flying...

That and Blackbirds are stupidly brave.

We currently have 2 bird feeders being regularly topped up.

We feed the birds all year round, its getting so expensive now the peanuts are approaching £40 a bag and bird seed although a lot cheaper does not last long. We have tried using our chicken feed but they dont seem to keen on that is there anything that you guys use that would be more economical?

The bird eating squirrels?

Not sure I'd want to encourage them.

I feed them from my shotgun I'm afraid.

Good man! Don't be conned like me into buying the expensive "specialist" squirrel food. They turned their noses up at it and just picked out the large nuts that were mixed in. They do love monkey nuts which Tesco/Sainsburys sell big bags of.

What sort of chicken feed have you tried?

I can't imagine they'd get on with layer's pellets, but some corn or something else without grit in it might work?
