Never been offered it! What is the cost? Would it replace two tyres if you got a puncture in one with, say, 3mm left?

You have to pay for the 5mm you've already used and I doubt they'd cover more than the one that's punctured.

I'd be interested to hear how they'd deal with a puncture that meant replacing all 4 tyres due to non-availability (i.e. obsolete) of a matching N rating number tyre.

I bought it with my car in April 11, from Porsche EL. My policy covers up to 5 tyres (£300/tyre) and 5 wheel refurbs (£100/refurb) over 3 years, with a max of 2 per year. I've collected 3 punctures already in ~13k miles. frown Covered the first 2 no problem, 3rd was obviously not covered as I exceeded 2 in the year. Hopefully I won't pick up any more punctures, but I think it's worth it for the refurbs alone.
As a comparison I also had a tyre policy with my old BMW, it was cheaper, premium was the cost of one tyre rather than two, but didn't cover wheel refurbs. That policy was a lot more restrictive regarding tread depth. The 'BMW' policy wouldn't pay out below 3mm, 'Porsche' policy has no explicit limit.

When I bought my RS in Oct 2010 I was told Tyre Cover was no longer available. Has this changed and has anyone info re recent purchases?

This was an option (amongst others that the salesman likes to try and make a margin on) when I purchased in July but I keep money in bank and 5000 miles later haven't needed it yet, and after all we are only risking the cost of a puncture or 2 or a tyre!

Offered it, didn't take it. Insurance is only worth having if you can't afford the hit in the event the risk covered crystalises (the risk in this case being a puncture/replacement tyre. And if you can't afford a replacement tyre then I would question whether you should really be buying a car, particulalry an expensive one). Yes, I could have a puncture tomorrow and wished I had the policy but the same could be said for any of the white appliances I got offered insurance on from the shop/website and turned down. On average, the payouts I would receive on all policies I get in my lifetime are likely be less than the premiums, otherwise the insurance companies would likely go bust.

So I just insure any risk that is simply too large for me to cover (like the car itself, my house etc) or anything you can't put a price on like a life. 'Self insuring' for all the other generally smaller things make more sense to me..

(I present this argument every time a Saturday kid tries to offer me insurance on an iphone or whatever. They kind of wish they hadn't bothered by time I'm done laugh )

This country is insurance mad. I know it can be sensible to cover major risks, but tyres!

If you took every insurance and extended warranty on every product you bought, you would be bankrupt.

It is always cheaper to self insure on lower value items over the long term.

I remember being in a bmw garage who were trying to sell this - I dismissed immediately as I usually do with all these sales products. But the salesman did highlight that it includes malicious damage. And he really emphasised this. So I asked well what if my tyres are worn close to the limit and somebody slashes them. He said then that would mean you get brand new tyres free of charge. No questions asked. Then he smiled and said now you know why so many people take this product.

I didn't take it anyway, but I am sure many have taken it for these kind of 'claims' down the line.

FFS! They charge the cost of 2 tyres to cover the risk of, err, needing new tyres IF you're unlucky and have a puncture?! Why on earth would anyone take up a deal like that?!!

I bought a kettle from Argos for 6.50 (for a rental property - they were out of stock on the 5 pound ones;) ) and they offered me 3 years cover (first 12 months covered anyway!) for 4.95. Doesn't sound such a bad deal compared to this tyre insurance lark scratchchin

I did take it when buying my Cayman S in 2006; it cost £299. I had two rear punctures in the three years it covered, and got two new tyres, less £10 excess each time - total cost would have been about £480 - 500 and I paid £299, plus £20, thus saving about £160 - 180.

However, since it expired I have had 1 puncture, which I had repaired at a cost of £10. This has been discussed at length on here over the years, but I am happy with using a properly repaired tyre.

I bought it with mine not for the tyre insurance, but for the wheel refurbs. I could guarantee there's no way my wheels will stay pristine for three years and diamond-cut lips aren't the cheapest things in the world to refurb anyway. 18 months in and they've got a couple of small marks on so I'll wait until just before the three years are up and get them all refurbed for a fraction of the cost.

If I happen to get a puncture in the meantime then that's just extra added value to me.

Kudos

thread resurrection

Any recent updates on costs?

Have been offered it but declined. Am now reconsidering - 21" tyres will not be cheap to replace, but am thinking more about the refurb on the alloys more than anything

When I bought my car nearly four years ago from an OPC, I was offered tyre insurance, GAP insurance, smart repair insurance and 'bodycare' as add-on items. I understand why they offer it, but c'mon, I turned them all down but they still felt the need to wheel out the pretty girl to have another go.
