Mondeo tdci 130 glow plug problems? ?
Discussion
Hi guys,
Had a bit of a problem with the daily Mondullo
Couple of times the glow plug light has come on and started flashing whilst driving, when this happens its well down on power, seems to have no boost? First time it happened I just switched it off and that sorted it. Now a few days later and same thing happens but it just comes back after a few mins driving. Limped the few miles home and eventually it cuts out, but did start again fine.
Any thoughts, the hand book is not much help seems to be suggesting aux heater, glow plugs, injector pump relay, or fuel fired heater ??
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appriciated
Cheers Phil

Dunno if the blanking plate will make any difference 'cos mine has recently started playing up like this and I've had a blanking plate fitted for a couple of years now along with a decat.
My mechanic had a look at the car & it had recorded (after the first instance) a fault code relating to the throttle position sensor. Not tried fixing or even testing anything yet though.

I'd start with the EGR valve as it's a common problem. They can clog up/seize. Dependent upon the age of the car you may be able to just remove it and blank off the pipe. Also, a good clean of the valve with carb cleaner may help.
As a "tragic" addition to this, my glow plug light was flashing today, very down on power, could hardly pull away from the lights, and when it did, it looked like there was a tyre fire behind me! Dropped into my garage for a diagnostic check and was told that the turbo actuator arm was shot (a fairly common problem if you Google it). Since the actuator and the turbo is a whole unit that will be £1100 plus fitting, sir.However....
There is a guy on e bay who can recondition the actuator for £200 (there may even be a fix I can do myself). it appears them being all one unit is not wholly correct.
I'll let you know how I get on.

Unlikly you will be able to do it yourself but try http://www.bba-reman.com/uk/index.aspx they now have a fix for the unit & you will get a proper warranty as well bear in mind that the control unit is often ruined by the vanes it the turbo sticking which overloads it so make sure this is all moveing freely before spending money replaceing the control unit the turbos are available cheper than £1100 though http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Ford_Mondeo_2.0_...However....

Car was hesitating, no power, glow plug light and loads of smoke. Limped it to my garage who diagnosed an actuator fault. All one unit so a new turbo needed at £1100 plus fitting. Got straight onto google.
I came across "that ebay guy" Turbo Repairs
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MONDEO-2-0-TDCI-MK3-ELEC...
and after an informative chat on the phone it was determined that the actuator did seem knackered. Now, he's near Hull and I'm near Liverpool. I was expecting to have to post it off but he said that he would rather see it on the car, and, if I covered the fuel, he would come to me.
2 days later there is a knock at the door. Would have been 1 day but the M62 conspired against him.
Hooked up his fancy computer to the the car and found 2 fault codes. The actuator and the EGR. Cleared the codes, rescanned a couple of times, go the same codes. Car would hardly start, ran rough when it did and smoke was everywhere. Gassed a passing elderly nun (seriously!).
Right, lets look at the actuator.
Takes the case apart and it is covered in little black powder specks. The bushes in the motor inside were shot (after 160,000 miles). These could not be repaired but a new motor could be fitted which he had with him. I was told that the motors are not easy to get hold of and even then he has to "finish them off". 15 mins later all done.
Car now would start, and smoked allot less. Actuator fault had gone. I still had some hesitation so I blanked off the egr and now all is good (did 250 miles today, nice and smooth).
Anyway, considering I was looking at over £1100, all these works came in at £275 with a 3 month warranty.
Couldn't be happier.
