GTR hinge problem
Discussion
You only want to make a new thread for the screws but with the best will in the world you are not going to do this without getting araldite over everything so yes a film of Vasaline over the screws and hinge body. If you leave too much Vasaline on the threads the Araldite will not penetrate and you will still not get a decent thread.
If that does not work or if you want to go for a propper engineered solution then drill out and bond in a brass insert.

Since It's a CanAm that I'm building I'm not fimiliar with the exact fixing method of the GTR hinge, I know the hinge you mean, I've just never looked that closely at it . However, I have quite a bit of experience in something that could help here, I have repaired many kiteboard footstrap fixingings in the past and it could be a similar type of repair. I know the two jobs may seem entirely different, but at the end of the day both jobs require screw fixings to be glued back in place and you don't want them to pull out again and your big problem is that since it is now damaged, you need the repair to be even stronger than the original hinge fixing otherwise it's just going to pull out again.
The best glue to use would be an acrylic one since it is far less likely to crack or fracture compared to epoxy.
However there is a huge difference in cost with acrylics being far more expensive, but you get what you pay for!
As an example, a bath sealant size tube of a suitable acrylic glue can be anything from £100.00+
If you think that's way too much (and lets face it, who wouldn't) and you decide to go down the epoxy route, i would strongly recommend not using straight epoxy as it is quite brittle once fully cured. You need to use some micro balloons mixed into the epoxy as that will allow some flex before the epoxy gives way which in effect does make it stronger, but again, I'm not sure of the exact job you're faced with so its difficult to offer you exact advice.
If you want to pm me or post a photo or two I may be able to give you a better solution though.
I hope that helps a bit though,
Pete

Rs Componants do several adhesives. Might be worth having a look. You can get epoxy with steel additives, Could be worth a look......
Thanks for advice, as an update the Araldite didn't work. Took it to a GRP specialist he gave me some filler the name of which escapes me and that did the trick with the aid of the captive nut. All good now.Cheers
