Ps3 has died.

Sat down for a quick bf3 sesh and the ps3 has died.

Turns out its this dreaded ylod!! What a bugger.

Looking on the web at repairs and it looks very simple, however it sounds like its more like a temporary fix with people doing the repair every couple months. I might just treat myself to a slim ps.

Stuck mine in a box and did the hair dryer trick, been OK for a couple of months now. Worth a try but doubt it will last for ever.

Original PS3 when they first came out so done well and seen many, many hours of use.

Mines a fatty 80gb and it's about 3years old. So no old timer but it gets used for a couple hours every single day so it's done fairly well.

I could probs do without the gaming for a while, I have just come to rely on it for blu-ray and iplayer also!

Looks like morissons have good deals instore so I might go have a look tomorrow.

Give Sony a ring. A repair costs less than a new one and if you have a "fat" PS3 they (used to, at least) offer you the option of a Slim as a replacement for the same price as a repair.

Now that is rather interesting.

Have seen 360gb slims for about £200 now though, with a blu ray too.

Same thing happened to me. Save your save-games to USB and buy another. There is not longterm fix.

Sounds like the repair is going to cost £128. There have been a couple of deals where the 160gb has been £150 or the 320gb has been £200 with some freebies. If I could get a deal like that I'd buy a new one, that way I'd be getting a full warranty (not 90day with the repair).

A mate has suffered the same problem recently, I think we'll try and repair ours together to salvage our game saves etc and then chuck the ps3 on ebay for spares etc (should be able to get £30-40).

Managed to salvage my battlefield disc last night of which I'm glad. Did some fan test and it popped on out.

There is no way to permanently fix them or any shop that can promise that either. New ones are cheap enough now.

Don't get it fixed, I know many people's have stopped again only a couple months after repair, they are cheap enough now new.

Managed to get a bargain. PS3 320gb slim, karate kid blu ray, resistance 3, move starter kit and dance star move game all in for £200! Instore at morrisons. The 320gb is generally about £250 on its own.

Will repair the ylod myself to salvage the data and probs stick it on ebay for spares or see what CEX want to give me.

My original 60GB launch version got the YLOD on Friday night after a power surge - Fortunately I had all the tools (heat gun/correct size screwdrivers/thermal paste) already, so a couple hours later I had it up and running again, following .

I've paid for a 90-day PSN+ supscription now, so that my save games are safe.

Now I've got PSN though, I'm suddenly thinking that I need to upgrade the HDD. Just downloading all the free games when they become available is going to fill it very quickly!

If you are happy to get a new one, try opening the case and giing it a clean. I hear they can get ALOT of dust in them. Some people have got theirs to work again agfter a clean out. Worth a try!

I repaired one for a friend a couple of months ago and can confirm there was a lot of dust inside the unit. It even prompted me to clean my own PS3 as it can't have been helping cooling thus increasing the risk of YLOD.

The one I fixed is still going strong, I used a very very hot heat gun

My original one went YLOD in November, Console Doctor fixed it for £59 but it died again in January while still under warranty they seemed a pretty professional setup to be fair, no quibles with refund etc. Replaced it with a slim and using the 500Gb disk as a spare usb drive now.

My Brother tried that with his but using a somewhat hamfisted technique he managed to melt one of the chips inside the unit and just killed it further.
