Hi,
I am a new member and would appreciate your views on the infamous subject of tyres. You will be pleased to hear that it's not about which brand but rather should they be mixed (front and rear)?
I have put a deposit on an E92 M3 and the car has got two brand new Pirelli's at the rear, one new and one worn Conti at the front. As it happens they will also be replacing the worn front tyre to a new Conti but they insist that this combination of tyres is currently receommended by BMW.
Any thoughts?

is that an AUC? sounds a bit suspect to me..the tyre explanation that is, not the car.. I am a new member and would appreciate your views on the infamous subject of tyres. You will be pleased to hear that it's not about which brand but rather should they be mixed (front and rear)?

slightly o/t but i've been looking at a couple of aucs recently and some of the chat the salesmen come out with is, quite frankly, laughable.
best of all was the XXXX SE Sport, i was phoned back about after specifically requesting a Sport...when i queried it he said he'd check and returned after a minute to say i was right, SE and Sport were two distinct trim variants..
apologies, my point is, they're car salesmen, take what they say with a pinch of salt and, usually, there's a proper car available for the patient.
but mixed tyres on a car like that is pretty egregious.

Thanks for that Roofer, I have just asked for written confirmation in my email to them, will be interested in the response. My gut feel at the time was that it was wrong but it could be that things have moved on hence why I thought I would ask you guys.
I am sure it's just down to the fact that they didn't want to change all four tyres but you have to believe that they wouldn't deliberatley compromise the car in any way to save a bit on their margin would you?

I'm not familiar with which tyres are recommended for the E92 M3 but I would refuse to accept a mix front and rear on a BMW AUC; it may be that both the Contis and the Pirellis are approved by BMW but I doubt they'd recommend mixing brands. From the sounds of it the dealer is proposing to put one new tyre on the car anyway so personally I'd say forget the new Conti and put two new Pirellis on the front instead; that way you have four new tyres that are also a matched set. I would be surprised if the dealer would lose the sale for what is in effect the cost of one tyre so stick out and if they won't play ball look elsewhere! Agreed! A salesman at my local dealership tried to tell me the other day that DCT wasn't available on the the 335i coupe and that the choice was between a manual or a conventional automatic; suppose BMW have only been fitting DCT on the 335i coupe for just over 4 years so perhaps it's a bit unreasonable to expect someone who sells them for a living to be aware of such a recent innovation. Sorry to be sarcastic but the lack of product knowledge demonstrated by some car salespeople really is depressing at times....! JNW1 said:

I gave up when he told me he could source me a car from anywhere in the country, but unfortunately, other franchises would be loath to let sellable stock go. all this against a back drop of telling me not to bother looking at the website as he could do that for me...when he finally phoned later he was able to offer me the apparent b
d offspring of two trim levels, at roughly £1.5k over book price. i queried this and he said that they have to buy the car in so there's a risk they'll be left without stock...so was he loading the price to cover this? who knows...i was left totally bewuildered by the whole experience - he seemed to expect me to leave the whole thing up to him and just accept a vastly inflated price, there was a car on the auc website at hexagon for less cash than he was selling at, and he plied his trade in a north east fishing town...

I've also been left bewildered by the attitude and approach of some BMW dealers. There are secondhand, nearly-new, E92 335i's advertised at more than you'd pay for a new one yet when you try to talk a deal there's no movement on price on the cars they're selling (which are literally thousands over top-book) and the part-ex offer is below Glass's Guide as well. The net result is a number of these 335i's have been sitting around for months but the dealers would apparently prefer to have them decorating their forecourts than sell them for a realistic price; bizarre! Agree with JNW1, during my search (that may not be over yet)a dealer in the north would not take anything off their screen price even at cars going over £40k. Apparently it's an 'everyday low price' policy so if you find something similar in their area at a lower price they will match it. I guess you have to admire their approach if it's working for them but when you are refused a 1.5% discount on a £40k+ car you do wonder if we really are in recession.

i'd say these days leasing is where they make their cash...every dog and his dick in my office has a 5 series through the leasing scheme, even though it makes far better sense to take the allowance and choose wisely..i'd go with a 335 over a 520 every time, to have a 335 on a co car scheme will cost a kidney.however the 'man maths' is usually skewed to convince themselves that they can take the brand new one to impress the neighbours...

I've also had the "it's the cheapest car advertised" comment but if it's the cheapest of a set of cars that are all over-priced it's still too expensive as far as I'm concerned! Of course the dealers could be right - and their pricing policy may be realistic - but the number of cars that have been sticking for weeks and in some cases months would suggest otherwise. I also don't understand why dealers think anyone would pay more for an 11-reg car with 8k miles on the clock than they'd pay for a brand new one with the same spec; it's not like the delivery time is that long on a new 335i so IMO you'd have to be crazy bonkers to pay mid to high 30's for a secondhand one!
