Waxoyl your car at home?
Discussion
I'm keen to keep the underneath of my car looking as rust-free as the top. Is waxoyling something you can do at home with the car on jackstands, or is some previous experience required with things that should/should'nt be coated?
TBH I was planning on geting a few cans of this and just spraying everything under the car that has rust on it or looks like it is exposed.
Can anyone else offer some advice?

Sure can - http://pistonheads.com/xforums/topic.asp?h=0&f...
As above though, much better products than waxoyl. www.rejel.co.uk is a good source who do 'kits'.

Sounds like a horrid job, I took my car to a local place that was recommended for waxoyl, it took him nearly 12 hours to clean, prep and apply the evil smelly black stuff. A couple of hundred quid well spent as far as I am concerned
Since when has Waxoyl been black?I much prefer to use Dynax S50 from Bilt-Hamber, seems to last much longer.

You need to treat the areas of rust that ere there before you doing any Waxoyling. TBH I was planning on geting a few cans of this and just spraying everything under the car that has rust on it or looks like it is exposed.

I helped a mate do the underside of his bug once. Very messy. I'd leave it to a company who specialises in the task.

Always is a relative term. The last cans I bought were in 1987 (job lot of 25 litres) and I'm sure it wasn't available in black then.
I've been using it on & off since I started in the motor trade in 1984 and I am certain it has always been available in black or clear.I'd agree there are better products out there though.
Thanks for all the replies guys
I'd be tempted to get it done by a pro, but the last quote I got a few years ago from a Land Rover specialist was not far short of a grand! I don't suppose anyone in the SE can recommend somewhere?
The stuff I linked to on Halfrauds website was intruiging as it says that it not only prevents rust, but treats it too - so no prep to get rid of it required. And it comes in a spray can which seems nice and easy to get in hard to reach places.

Waxoyl certainly isn't the stuff to be applying to a cold car in cold weather. I've got a tin of the stuff somewhere together with pump etc but haven't bothered with it for years. I thought the general feeling was that it wasn't very good at getting into the crooks and nannies where the rust was busily eating away - though it would stop anymore moisture getting in, hence the move towards more 'penetrating' fluids.
As for commercial quotes the price charged is up to the garage so one may quote silly money while another could be quite reasonable for the same work. Is there much call for rustproofing these days?
