Hi Mike

Yes its held by I think a 10 mm (spanner) size nut up near the windscreen to the right of the steering column. On most cars there is also a bracket from the bottom of the dash to near the bonnet opening handel. Off course there are nuts in the opposite side of the car in a simalar place.

It's on another thread somwehere, but there are two bolts embedded in the fibreglass, and two nuts with large washers which just clamp onto a 'shelf' on the body.

I replaced the nuts on mine for wingnuts (6mm thread) so that it's much easier to get into the space as you need double jointed wrists to use the spanner... oh, and add a couple of spring washers to stop it coming loose again...

Hi I also am trying to remove the dash on a 1987 350iS2, I found and removed the 4 fixings as described but the dash is still held firmly at the top edges, it will not slide back as described by Mike, any ideas what is holding it.

Thanks in anticipation Mike

Hi

Sounds like you haven't undone the 2 nuts just under the windsceen, which you can see (If you are lucky) unless you lay on your back with your head in either foot well.

mike, 10mm nuts are right up the top accessed from under the dash, passenger side is actually above glove box in a right crappy place towards outside of the car,be ok if there was a hole in top of glove box,the drivers side one is right up behind dials again on door side of steering column but its a fiddle with a small 10mm open ended spanner,no need to undo nuts all the way coz the dash captive bolts slide into slots so once loose the dash will slide out of the slots.

That little joke from me about double jointed wrists isn't entirely wrong .....

Assuming they are the same as the earlier 280s (I think they are, and Wooly's text confirms that)

The passenger side one is RIGHT OVER the glove box, you have to snake your fingers and hands around the back of it and up under the crash pad, and the drivers side s almost between the speedo and tacho, and also a right pain, and chances are you'll get your fingers caught in the wiring the first time.

Have a good feel around first, and then you need a 10mm spanner (they are 6mm threaded bolts)
and it's not easy to use the spanner. That's why I replaced mine with wingnuts and spring washers.....

Don't forget to undo the speedo cable !

Thanks for the info, seems as though this is the first time the dash has been removed as there were some small pieces of leather glued into the corners of the dash which firmly stuck the ends down, with a lot of wriggling it eventually came free. Wing nuts seem a good idea in case it ever needs to come out again, the back of my hands suffered on the many sharp bits whilst getting the nuts undone.
