Going to London

Tomorrow's joy is to get from Notts to Bermondsey. I was thinking of just driving in and paying the £whateveritis congestion charge, but second thoughts of going to somewhere like Surbiton (I need to go to Sunbury in the afternoon) parking at the station or one of the side roads and getting the train in.

Driving's cheaper on spec,even accounting for parking at the destination

Anyone done similar, and is it less stressful to dump the car on the outskirts of London and get the train in?

I took my brother to a footy match down in london, we just dumped the car on the outskirts and got the train/tube to the stadium easy peasy, also driven into london a few times no bother but traffic can be a pita sometimes

Personally I'd drive but I think it depends on what you're more comfortable with. Bermondsey is easy to get to, A12 & through the Rotherhithe tunnel is probably best & also Bermondsey is on the border of the congestion zone so depending on the address of where you're going you may be able to park up outside the zone & walk.

Driving down to Sunbery will probably be the worst part of your trip depending on time of day. I wouldn't bother going to Surbiton to catch the train because that'll be worse to get to than both the others.

You won't need to go through the congestion charge to get to Bermondsey.

You'ld be mad to dump the car to go East if you need to go West the next day.

Cool, what I was thinking was M1/M25/A3 (or some other combination involving the A43 or M69/M40), dump the car at Surbiton and train there, then back, pick up the car and up to Sunbury, which cant be more than 15 mins away. Surbiton's on the Waterloo quick train line IIRC, the one that goes to Woking (or did, 8 years ago)

it really annoys me that if you are not from London, then there is no chance you will no much about the congestion charge, let alone what you have to do about it, or where it is or how to pay etc.

I know there is a congestion charge, because some poncy git with a crap haircut called boris is always banging on about it on the news.

However the last time I went down there (and for the first time in 15 years) I noticed the cameras, signs and road marking expecting you to know exactly what it is all about. 30 mins later of trying to ring around friends so they can google exactly what times it is enforced, how much to pay and how to pay I realised it didn't cover the time I was travelling at.

Sorry but unless you've been living in a cave for the past 10 years then you will know something about the charge whether its from reading a paper, watching TV or hearing people on the street. If you dont know what to do then it takes 5 mins to find out.

Drive down the M1 and park up at Stanmore station which isn't far from the motorway exit. Jubilee line all the way to Bermondsey with no changes and takes about 40 odd minutes.

very little street parking, southwark have zoned just about everything and have large numbers of clampers

I may be wrong but thought parts of Bermondsey crossed the tower bridge road border line.

Personal choice but I wouldn't, I'd come down the A1, M11 & straight into Burmondsey, no M25 that way.

M1, M24,M40. Dump the car near a piccadilly line station >=zone3, then tube in and out to bermondsey (changing at green park for the jubilee), drive over to Sunbury. HTH
