I was speaking to Wayne today about replacing the plastic manifold with something well crafted and out of aluminium.

I do not know if this is a good idea or not? is anybody else interested? the more interest then they will consider making something.

The purspose for me is to have something which looks better, out of matt ali to match the other pro alloy components, have the Noble logo etched on the top and to be symetrical instead of overhanging the rear bank and to perform the same or better as the original.

I have no idea what it would involve or what would dictate the design, does anybody know wayne who could talk him through the technical/engineering aspect to see how it could be achieved and if viable..

The ST220 inlet is aluminium and presumably has a chance of fitting.....

you need to build a set of intake trumpets and then build an ally box around them (plenum)

then you need to fit a throttle body

and you have an intake manifold !

to do it properly you need to measure the airflow before and after on a flow bench

might be worth fitting a mondeo st220 manifold instead - its ally and is supposed to flow better

if i can get some interested parties i have a mate who builds intake manifolds and could do a few for us

Im doing an inlet manifold... but I have a specific spec that probably wont suit anyone else lol smile

I plan to use jenvey trumpets and make the inlet around them

About five years ago me, Simon from Jenvey and Richard from Omex, looked at making a plenum and running throttle bodies, something like the Audi LeMans cars, we worked out that you would need to cut a square hole in the clam, It was all doable but! After a lot of thought concluded that it would make a great track/race car but would be undrivable as a road car.

So we didn’t bother and played with the Renault instead.

Does anyone know if the ST220 is a direct replacement? I need to take the manifold off mine for valve springs and cam timing, and since the ST220 is only about £60-70 from a breakers could be an easy and cheap improvement?

the throttle body sits in exactly the same place

i am pretty certain the clam will shut fine

The upper manifold should fit but the rear bank fixing is only via 2 bolts & not four as per the existing plastic so l assume you will also need to change the lower manifolds that contain the injectors. Not sure if the fixings are in the exactly the same positions.
Lots of different connections etc but no reason why it can't be altered, no idea if it will fit under the clam & really don't know what you would gain if anything ! I think it could only be proven on a back to back rolling road session.
The plastic one is smooth internally, light & doesn't absorb heat, the ST220 alloy one is rough cast internally, heavy & will absorb heat !

TH in the states told me their inlet manifold was a 60bhp gain over stock as a direct swop on a mild tune car.

Must admit I find that hard ro believe but they re the ones who did testing... Also their tunes cars don't rev as high as mine so bigger potential gain on mine.

Spoke to Trevor earlier - he doesn't think there's any performance gain to be had. Didn't one of the plastic inlets disintegrate a while ago though? I think I remember a thread about it.

because the manifold is metal and not plastic it does not need so many bolts to make it seal

i can back to back dyno test one

i am planning to do some testing soon on a new billet throttle body and ported intake manifold - i will post the results up for all to see

If you could get you mate to look into making one then that would be great, if it can offer power gains aswell as looking nicer and being stronger, it will surely be a winner.
I was thinking of the build in the same way, i.e. tubes with a box built around them, but would want it to look nice of top, raised or embossed logo surrounded by lined pattern to the give it depth.
I think the stock 3litre one looks pants and when i open the bay peoples first comments are with regards to the plastic.
Wayne at Pro alloy has said that if anybody is willing to take their car to him he will make a prototype and work out a price, i think he sees the potential of selling a fair few.

This does all beg the question of course - why were these not supplied from new as the rest of the engine is from that model?

the engine is not from a mondeo st220 as everyone thinks - its form a ford maverick

the 2.5 engine was however mondeo based

to do this properly requires the manifolds to be flow tested on a flow bench
i suggest a std noble manifold and the st220 one be tested back to back
then a protottype will need to be built and that tested too

this all costs time and money

i need to get an idea of how many people are interested in a billlet/fabticated manifold and then i can get some costs

What would be nice is to consider the 2.5 also.
I think the only difference between the ST200 and 220 is that at the point each tube goes to the lower inlet it's one big oval as supposed to two Seperately inlets.

It would be nice to know if the 3.0 lower inlet and ST220 upper inlet would fit the 2.5

Developing on for all cars would make it more of a prospect.

Hey the 2.5 already has a nice strong symetrical plenum thingy taht allows access to all te plugs, if the 3.0l had the same we would be ok... you have it good already smile..
