A quandry a friend is currently dealing with.

Ok, so you bought a used car 3 years ago from a main dealer and were assured the vehicle was HPI clear. The vehicle was approx 12 mths old at the time of purchase. Fast forward to today and you have gone to part ex this car at another main dealer (different marque) only to be told the vehicle has come back as a Cat D.

A call to HPI confirms the status but also shows that the car was 'written off' 12 mths after purchase - the vehicle has never been subject to any insurance claim within the period of ownership.

HPI are checking records but what else to do...??

That's it, they make mistakes and they'll check what insurer is supposed to have paid out and call them to check details, numberplates can be entered incorrectly sometimes. If there was no claim then it will be sorted out in a week or so.

As above really. If all is well the records will get changed and no more will need to be done.

Thanks chaps. My thoughts exactly that it will all come out in the wash.

Similar situation, but HPI showing Stolen/recovered before my purchase (saw dealer's HPI clear on purchase). Have mentioned it to the dealer, still no action from him.

Thoughts?

randlemarcus: Many people say you should always do your own HPI, as the dealer's might not be quite as reliable as you might hope.

If it is the case that the car was registered stolen before your purchase and the dealer told you otherwise, though, you can royally bend him over for any cost you might incur as he effectively defrauded you.

That said, a stolen/recovered doesn't really affect the status of the vehicle that much. It remained with its rightful owner and wasn't damaged, so..

Yeah, know what you mean, but the dealer was/is trusted by me. Live and learn eh?

The HPI came as much of a shock to him as it did to me. It seems to have been applied after my purchase, but retrospectively , IYSWIM.

Bear in mind that HPI's records take time to update, its more than feasible, given that you bought the car at 12months old and the car was apparently written off at 12months old, that the HPI data was lagging when the dealer checked it. Its also possible that the current hpi information is incorrect.
