I was under the impression that cars registered up to somewhere around 2006 fell into the older blanket tax banding style of £260 for 12 months. ]
But from what it looks like on the Govt. website, now appears that that has changed again and all cars from 2001 in the K band are dry bummed taxed at £440 per year.

Have I got that right?

from the dvla site:

Cars registered on or after 1 March 2001 (based on fuel type and CO2 emissions)
The rates shown only apply to cars that have been type approved in category M1 and registered on the basis of CO2 emissions measured in grams per kilometre (g/km) driven. These details are shown on the registration certificate (V5C).

Vehicle tax rates for cars registered on or after 1 March 2001 are split into 13 bands depending on CO2 emissions. The amount you'll pay depends on which band your car is in. The lower a car’s emissions, the lower the vehicle tax payable on it.

Standard rates - The following table contains the rates of vehicle tax for already registered cars.

The tax banding came in in 2001, but the £400+ rate only applies to cars post March 2006.

oddly enough, now is probably one of the best times to buy a 2005 gas guzzling 4x4 or V8 or similar.

taxes on such cars are only going to rise and these cars are still relatively new (imo).

so it's my excuse to go after something big and daft next!

When in the future am i going to be able to run a 3L petrol that's still fairly new. With such cheap taxes.

3.0L, you're not even trying there!

This exact issue is the reason I am pushing for a v8 Grand Cherokee for our next car.
