Doing 50 mph, its a long stretch, no indication they will move over at any point, what do you do ?

1/ Wait patiently as a safe distance for as long as it takes.

2/ Wait for a while then flash lights once, hoping they move over.

3/ Wait a while, Scoot up the inside.

4/ Drive a bit close and hope they notice you and move over.

5/ Drop it a cog and go past at full chat

Personally I'd do 2 or 3. If they are not going to move and they are travelling below the limit I would be willing to pass on the inside, just not taking the piss whilst doing so.

Assuming its an NSL....

3 and 5 are illegal.
4 could get you a charge of dangerous driving
2 could also get you done for causing alarm or harassment

which leaves 1! Annoying as it may be legally (and safely) you have no choice but to sit behind the plodder at a safe distance until they move over of their own accord.

Hmm, thinking along similar lines, I did this the other day, as did a Jag XF behind me but was wondering if you get seen doing this it is an offence, not sure what offence but potentially, overtaking some cretin sat in the outside lane could cost you dearly, do the Police go for people for this ?

In the states its standard practice but over here you get nicked for it.

I thought it was illegal to undertake, but you can pass on the inside. An extreme example: lane 3 is in bad traffic and travelling slower then you in lane 1. You can keep going- you dont have to match their slow speed.

The illegal bit is to approach them in the outside lane, undertake, then pull back over to their lane and continue

Or and I being my usual wrong self?

This is my understanding too. However, I did hear a traffic policeman (remember those?) say that if there was room to undertake, there was room to move over, indicating a bit of leeway, providing you weren't driving like a powertool. Obviously 'safety' cameras don't have a 'discretion' mode...

What is illegal about '3'?

No law against undertaking.

However, it can be used to point towards dangerous/without due care; as the nice policemen pointed out to me when they stopped me ten miles further on after they'd recorded me undertaking at 119mph on my motorbike.

I have passed a police car on the inside (undertaking is carried out by undertakers - people who look after the dead) while it was tootling along in lane 2. No issue.

Agree, "Undertaking" seems to be a loaded term to say you are being naughty and is almost as heinous a crime as "Overtaking" for some, its "Overtaking on the inside". Would be interested to know the actual interpretation in law, whether its applied much and whether a copper would pull you for a safe pass on the inside of some dawdling feckwitt or whether they would pull the dawdling fecwitt.

2 at normal following distance is merely using your headlights to alert another road user of your presence. Doing it 3ft behind them would be another matter!

I'd get into lane 3, pass them at the usual speed then get back into lane one and put my indicator on for a few seconds and see if they get the message.

Who cares?

so presuming you are in lane 1, why would you go into lane 2 behind this chap when there is no vehicle to overtake?

stay in lane one, pull along side and continue past at a sensible speed differential

2/ Wait for a while then flash lights once, hoping they move over.

If I feel like making a point.

3/ Wait a while, Scoot up the inside.

My usual action.

5/ Drop it a cog and go past at full chat

If I'm angry at that moment and I've checked there are no police around.

Honest answers yes doesn't mean they're correct!

So?

3 and 5 are exactly what I would do evil

DCs can have 3 lanes (although I assumed there were 2 for the purposes of this thread)
