High cost of insuring a 2nd car
Discussion
Thinking of getting a 2nd car, but it seems it's just a minefield due to insurance. Current insurer doesn't like Subaru's (the proposed 2nd car) so their price for a 2nd car (though they say they are matching my no claims) is ridiculous, but I imagine if I go elsewhere then they won't give me ANY no-claims, so it will just be even worse!
And even if I accepted the high quote, they will only do a full annual policy, ie. won't synch the end-date with my current policy, so I'll always be out of synch.
I know I can do something like Admiral multi-car, but they don't like modified cars at all IME.
So I'm a bit stuffed at the moment. I'd kind of rationalised the additional depreciation, servicing, tax, etc, but the stupid money for additional insurance was a surprise.
Anyone got any pearls of wisdom before I bin the whole idea? Do some brokers like modified cars AND do multi-car policies? I'm thinking I will be looking at a very narrow insurance market.

Depending what car you get, a classic insurance policy makes things easier. My second car, a 1994 Peugeot 106 track car, is on a classic policy (through HIC) and it halved the insurance costs.
Downsides are limited milage, no business/commuting and no policy refunds if you cancel mid-term.

Ask what the cost would be to remove your no claims bonus from your current car (guessing its less of a risk than the Subaru) and then use this on the Subaru with the most competitive insurer.
Then when your current car comes up for renewal this year you will have 1 years NCB which should work out to a 30% discount.

What sort of mods does the car have?.
Remap, exhaust, mostly engine related, you wouldnt really know from looking at the car, its not a chavved-up ramraid halfords job. only 9 yrs old tho so probably wouldnt qualify for classic insurance.

17%. Just remap exhuast hoses haldex controller exhuast on a VAG 1.8T.
Admiral would quote on those mods, if you do a multicar quote on the website the options for mods are there too you can include them in the quote.I'm not sure what premium would be but no loss in trying.
Just a thought...
Get a multi-car policy. They should mirror your no claims. Wait a month then go elsewhere with you new no claims certificate. You will lose some money (an admin fee etc, but you will get a hefty refund), but the saving you'll make by going to somewhere like Keith Michaels will make up for it.

They mirror the NCB, cancelling mid term won't mean you walk away with a whole new set of ncb.Get a multi-car policy. They should mirror your no claims.
