Don't know quite how to ask this verbaly so I'm going to use pictures to explain.

I want something like this;

put in one of these;

to replace one which looks like this;

I hope this makes sense, I'm talking about the whole gear mechanism - knob,cover,gates - the lot.

Anyone know how I could do this?

Replacing the gear knob with something different is simple enough but the metal gear gate? I'm not sure anyone makes something like that for Z4M's or any BMW's for that matter. If you can't find a kit and have to go bespoke it'll definitely cost A LOT.

Can i ask WHY?

if its purely for looks.... you could get a fabricator to make one up with a mount plate cheap enigh out of 3mm alu sheet.

it may be an option for you - im just not sure why you would do it thats all. plus, your going to have to make sure its made to exact dims, positioning etc, otherwise your just going to bugger with the gearchange of a gearbox thats almost perfectly formed anyway.

you would have to take into account the movement that both the rubber gearbox bused allow and also the linkage bushings at the front and rear - could be a lot of hassle.

personally i would just leave it, my Z4M coupe changes gear so sweetly i wouldnt want to risk it.

It's just a thought at the moment but one thing I hate about gearboxes in general is how they are not so precise and wobble in the gate, but say the Ferrari F355- the metal gate just locked it in to place, plus I love the clunk sound it makes when you change.

As I said, just something I wanted to consider.

Well if you do end up trying a project like that i'd love to hear about it. I think the open gate look is very nice and the clack on every gear change is so cool. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5OEVKB6rk8

Aren't open gate shifts a little cumbersome?

Cool, yes. But hardly in keeping with the Z4M's more "muscle car" image. On something with finesse like a Ferrari, I would agree, it fits. The Z4M doesn't fit that mould.
