I and looking at going from a Hyundai Santa Fe to a Hyundai i800 van/people carrier.

I need room for work, and also a Taxi for staff in work when the weathers bad, Work in caring sector so it's important to be able to get into work and get staff due to snow, and when picking up stock. So a large car/van is needed. Also ideal to remove the back seats and take bikes to trackdays and for the trips to Le mans wink

Wondering how good winter tyres are and if they would be almost as good as having a 4x4 as the i800 is rear wheel drive. Only reason for not going for this van would be the problems when we have snow and ice.
Not worried about image just something that will be as good as a my Santa fe has been for the past 6 years. Also been looking at toyota hilux double cab, Kia Sorento. Not looking for anything french or Vauxhall. I won't go into why

Any helpful info greatly welcome

A van on full winters should get you most places in the UK.

OK other than the last 3 years we have not had much snow in Bristol. But the 4x4 was indispensable when we have had 1-2 weeks of deep snow.

And we may not have much snow for a few years. only had a day so far this winter

A van on full winters will get you most places (on road at least) that a 4x4 on normal tyres will. If you really need max ability howabout a VW Caravelle people carrier which you can get with 4WD? It will be quite a bit more to buy than the other one though.

Personally I'd go for some of the new-fangled super-duper all-season jobbies with the mountain and snowflake mark such as the Goodyear Vector or Kleber Quadraxer. Utterly amazing in snow and grip in cold wet and greasy conditions is extraordinary. There should be no problems leaving them on all year - they're all-season. You will not get stuck in snow.

I've banged on about these in the winter tyres thread - I cannot recommend them highly enough.

Have a look at vredestein snowtrac 3, we live in the highlands and usually get snowed in every year as there is a tight corner out of ours and a steep hill of new tarmac, so we fitted these tyres to the missus's Clio, what a difference, they are immense in the snow, think there may be a few youtube videos of the tyres in action.

What size are you after? (And we have the Klebers on SWMBO's hack and so far they've been impressive in the cold and mud. Not had any snow here thoughfrown)
