Mr V8Smith - Fuel Tank.
Discussion
Hi "young" Mike,
I've posted this here as it may interest others besides us.
Going back a week or two, you were going to get Allyfab to build you a new fuel tank. How's it going with this?
If you haven't started yet .....I have found a supplier of plastic petrol tanks at very good prices.
This would make sealing in a sender very easy and also cutting/drilling very easy too. Also no corrosion problems. It should be as strong as an ally tank, if not more so.
They list one that is almost the right size but I will look into whether there are further options.
Sorry, I can't remember their name but will check and enquire and keep you posted.
Cheers,
Kevin

Hi EvenolderKevin,
Yes spoke to them, and have arranged to have them make it at the end of summer assuming my tank is not in too bad condition. My car is going into Offords on Thursday and they will check it over thoroughly if it can wait until Sept/Oct that suits me better as dont want the car off the road 2-3 weeks in the summer!
If the plastic tank is practical with the S design, why not, how does it compare?
Anyone else got any reservations about Aluminium or Plastic tanks....? Its just the fact they are exposed underneath that bothers me.

Steady on young man ...I'm not that much older!
Yes good idea to do it over the winter, I'm doing that too.
I think I will look into this as it is half the price and should be very durable. My thinking is that most production cars now have plastic tanks and most are also exposed and I'm not aware of anyone who has punctured a tank. Could always "rubber coat" the tank too to bounce the stones off.
Hey, there's an idea, could strip my chassis and rubber coat that at the same time!
I'll see if I can get some dimensions for the tanks and where the filler is located (looks about right from photos) and the diameter of the fller etc.
Cheers,
Kev.

My golf has a plastic tank hanging underneath, it will out last the car and that has 210,000 miles on it.
